Squeaking from Driveshaft...

In my 2003 ford 350, DRW, 2WD, there is a bad squeaking coming from the middle of the driveshaft. The is a rubber cover right after what i was told is called a tower bearing..? That is right where the squeaking is come from. I was told to change this bearing and see if it solves the problem. Does this sound correct to anyone? Is there such a bearing? Hard to change? Prices?

That would be the carrier bearing

the bearing is not that pricey but you will need to press it off an back on.

Carrier bearing is what I would call it also. I'd say that's definitely the problem. Either that or a U-joint gone.

Yeah i lifted the rear of the truck up and put it in drive and it sounds like it is definitely coming from the carrier bearing. Any ideas on how long this will last for, it's been doing it for about a month now and i've actually taking a long trip. If i let it go to long will the bearing lock up on me or anything?

If it's already been making the sound for a month I would get it fixed quick!

Carrier bearings are a funny critter. It my last a year like that, or go out tomorrow. I would look for a driveline shop in your area and have them replace it. If you can drop the entire driveshaft, from tranny (or transfer case)to rear axle, have them change the bearing and balance it. You might consider replacing the u-joints at this time too. I personally like the greasable ones, but to each their own. I prefer to grease them at each oil change.

Its funny you mention the greaseable joints, John. My local parts place has a lifetime replacement balljoint that is not greaseable and more expensive but the one year warrenty balljoints are greaseable. I know we're talking about U-joints here but I thought I would throw that out there cause I thought it was funny.

Yeah, I know what you're saying there. A few years ago, I had replaced the carrier bearing and u-joints on my work truck at the time and while at the shop the guy says "I assume you want the non-greasable u-joints." I said no, I want the greasable ones. He looked at me and said that the non-greasable ones have a better warranty. I said, "I don't care. I just like the idea of greasing them. That way I know they have grease in them." In my line of work, I have seen many bearing failures due to lack of lubrication, not one from having too much!

Hey guys, just wanted to say thanks for the help. I took the driveshaft off and got the part then took it to my buddies machine shop and did it there. Sounds great no squeaking at all. Thanks again everyone.
