factory subwoofer??

anyone here have a factory subwoofer in a 04-08 F150? Next question, have you ever taken the system apart to see how/where its all wired together?? What type of amp is used and what size?

reason for asking, my '02 s'crew had a custom system with 2-12" subwoofers... i'm thinking of doing something with this truck that resembles the factory subwoofer. I'd like to keep the stock head unit as well. Thanks for any/all replies.

I have one, but I haven't taken it apart. I thought the head unit powered the sub.

i guess the biggest question needing answered is does the H/U do the job, or is there an external amp that powers the woofer... thanks for the reply though.

I haven't seen an amp in my truck, so I'll say it's powered by the head unit.

there's an amp on the bottom of the audiophile box that powers the subwoofer.

If you want to add an aftermarket amp and sub to your stock head unit, you need to use a line output adapter or buy an amp that has speaker level inputs. I did the latter when I added an amp and 10" sub to my truck.

Line out adapter is better than using an amp with speaker level inputs. Much cleaner sound in my opinion.

sure it is better but I don't think speaker level inputs is that bad, at least I don't notice any problem with just feeding my subwoofer, there's no turn-on "thump" or "pop" or anything like that.

thanks all. i have lots of experience with auto audio, but usually scrap the stock H/U for something aftermarket. i like the look of this stock H/U, so i'll probably go with a line driver...

Is it built into the subwoofer box? I've never taken mine apart. I just throw a CD or 6 in there, and turn it up.

it appears to be actually mounted on the bottom of the box. I don't have one, I'm just going by pictures of it, here's one:

I had speaker level inputs for a while. Had lots of bass but i was not crazy about the overall sound. Then i upgraded to the AVIC-D3. Love it.

I can't tell the difference between Pioneer and Bose. Just wanted to get that straight.

It sounds great with the audiophile system.

Wanted to up the noise level in my '05 a bit, so bought a sub/amp combo from Crutchfield. Mounted the unit behind the pass seat, also swapped rear factory speakers to Pioneers. Very easy install, 2 wires to existing speaker lead, 1 ground wire, 1 fused hot wire. Just the extra bass I wanted, no background noise in between CD songs, or radio. Best $200 I've spent lately.
