Seems like the switch could be wired in like the door switches and activate the "door ajar" light like on the rear hatch model vehicles when left open.
All of the compartments on the fire rigs have a switch to let the driver know if there is a compartment open. Works out pretty good sometimes also since theres always people in and out of them and no one seems to shut them right.

You could wire up a grounding switch with the inputs for the rear doors. I have a pdf file of the factory switches wiring and will post it as soon as I can get it uploaded to "my attachments" file on FTE.
I think there is enough room in the space on the end of the tailgate to install a surface-mount magnetic switch/magnet pair, so that it would be completely enclosed and hidden when the tailgate is closed.
