Question refreshing my 6.9

hey guys, just pulled my 6.9 out of my f250 and i want to slightly rebuild/reseal it. I ordered all my gaskets and such which includes head gaskets and an ARP head stud kit, since i will be running a turbo as well. I have a few questions though. Should I replace my lifters? should i replace my oil pump? And where can i buy piston rings?, I DONT want a kit just the rings...if possible. I am gonna replace the fuel pick up pump, and all the gaskets i can. If anyone has any suggestions or tips for me i would greatly appreciate it. thanks

Napa is usually where I get my parts. How many miles are on this engine. You do know that it's not a good idea just to install new rings without checking piston to cylinder clearances, cylinder bore for out of round and taper, and at least breaking the cylinder glaze or honing.

I have two idi engines and the one common thing that immediately comes to mind is there is at least one lifter that leaks down between starts. Makes it sound wounded but oil pressure fixes it right up..

I'd go with the new lifters and a complete valve/guide/spring upgrade in the heads, which are flat within specs., right?

Upgrading to 7.3 rockers would be nice. Even the 7.3 valves I belive are an upgrade.
the oil cooler is another one.
now since you do not want a kit including I'm thinking you are not wanting to spend anymore than you have too. I have never had any problems with lifters or any valve train problems on any 6.9's that I have owned. Anything can and will wearout there has not been a lot of post of bad valve train components. I personally would rather spend my budgetted money with new pistons than lifters and upgrades these motors are extremely durable in stock form. I would however go with headstuds if a turbo is in the future. the upgraded rockers can be installed at a later time without much trouble.
You never said why your doing this maybe low compression or what, How many miles.

Inspect and measure everything.
Magnaflux the block and heads.

No sense spending money on something about to break.

While you are inside, replace everything that is questionable.
Oil pump, I would replace
Cam depending on the miles and wear, probably
Lifters replace

Minimum bore, new pistons and rings.

Replace all bearings and seals.

What year is the 6.9?

I've read that when installing new rings in a diesel engine its important to make sure you get a good hone job on the cylinders... if you want to just re-ring it the new rings will never seat if it's not honed and it'll burn oil forever... haha thats what it is... an oil burner! but you know what I mean...lol. But for the time and money involved Dave .S is right...no point on rebuilding it only half way, I'd go with new pistons and rings with a min overbore, bearings and stuff. Or if it's not giving you trouble just leave it alone and install just the stud kit... many have installed a turbo on engines with high mileage.

well, the engine has 145,000k. it is all original, except i put a non wastegated turbo on (which will be getting a newer, better one soon), and i cranked up the fuel. The truck runs great, but always burned a little oil, nothin too bad, just somethin i wanted to look into, also it leaked oil from the oil pan so i wanted to pull the engine. so why not fix it up a little. No problems with anything except there are a few minor pits in one of the pistons. but the cylinder walls are perfect and the bearings are all good so i am gonna pretty much reseal everything and hope for the best.

I don't think you need to rebuild that engine. If you want you can put some ARP head studs in there, but 145k is not even the half way mark for that engine.

Your oil consumption was probably from valve stem seals, or valve guides. More likely just the seals though.

Have you done any compression checks on the engine?

How did the intake valve stem seals look. That could be the reason for burning a little oil.

You should be able to get them separate, it's recommended that you do not install seals on the exhaust valves, it appears to wipe out valve guides fairly quickly.

The 6.9 engine does not have that problem.

The valve guides were looser which usually caused a bit of oil consumption.

Also have you serviced the CDR?
It should be serviced every other oil change, and may be the cause of the excess oil consumption.

well i ordered the valve stem seals last night for the exhaust and intake valves, so i am gonna replace them, but i will look into the CDR. cause i never did service it at all. so I am gonna make sure everything is working properly and cleaned up properly. But Dave, one question...One of my pistons has about 6 or 7 pits in it. They are only about the size of a pinhead, nad are not very deep...what do you think about that?
