I found an 87 bronco 2 for 500 bucks. Its an xlt with power everything, cruise tilt, 5 speed, 90000 miles, and its rust free. Is this a good deal or should I pass.
It maybe a good deal or it maybe a piece of crap man. Youve got to do some detective work to find out. I personally bought mine for $400 and it looks good
But I should have taken it out for a burn first. Theres a few problems with mine and unless you take it out you dont have a snowballs chance in Hades of knowing. Id check the oil and if its a auto check the transmission fluid. Then Id ask ta take it out for a burn. Go through all the gears all the way to reverse,. Check and see if the transfer case is any good and most of all the front end most likely a D35 in it which are crap but lock it in and physically see if its any good. Find a big dirt mound and try and go up it if it makes any kind of sound I wouldn't get it.
Ive looked around here in Canada as well as the States and pretty much.. Thats the going rate for them. Like I say I bought mine for $400 but I should have looked her over better than I did I probably would have got her for less.
If you cant look it over then take it to a shop that can give you an answer. It may need a whole lot more work then $500
Not a bad price, even if you have to overhaul the brakes entirely (new rotors, pads, shoes, drums, pieces and parts, etc.). It is worth the initial investement, even if you have some things to fix on it. I paid twice that for my '87 and at the time didn't know about the brakes and other problems it had - but I do not regret buying mine in the least. Mine has over 160K on the odometer, but the engine, most of the transmission and most of the t-case probably has around 90k on it since the 1st owner flat towed it behind an RV and I bought it off the 2nd owner (as far as I know of) and he put maybe 30k miles on it and had bought it when the odometer had 100k on it, if what I was told was correct. I do suggest that you look it over very thoroughly and test drive it. If they won't let you take it somewhere to have the brakes, etc. looked at, then I might be a little hesitant - but if it otherwise checks out, then I think it's worth the investment, even if you end up having to put some $$$ into it to get it in top notch mechanical order.
I wouldn't just be a lil hesitant man. Id just leave it right were it sits if they dont let you do that. Why buy some one else s headache? Any older vehicle your going to have to spend a lil extra cash. But make sure it dosnt need it like right away.
Hey kernel says in your sig that you've got the exploder coils and leafs? Why'd ya stop there??? My Idea with mine is to transplant just about all I can squeeze into it from a exploder. Just a question??
If it runs and drives OK and is in good shape inside and out it would be a good deal.
I would almost bet it had 190,000 instead of 90,000. Lots of wear on the gas and break pedal might be an indicator of higher mileage vehicles.
Not a good deal if the engine has any ticking noise.
Check the rear cross member on the body for rust. The one that has the rear body mounts on it. Also check the vertical seam on the firewall under the hood for rust.

The coils and leafs were done to cure a sagging rear end and give a little lift(little did I know that the top shackle bolts needed some attention as well and the shackles wouldn't rotate freely...). I have a D44 front and 9" rear from an Early Bronco that are going under mine when the time and funds permit. Plan is to get at least 6" of lift out of the swap and go with 33s or 35s and eventually re-gear or swap in an Atlas t-case. The 44 has a Trac-lock carrier, and I'd prefer to find a carrier for the 9" instead of installing lockers. That may change. Going back to "when time... permit(s)"... I'm active duty Navy and currently stationed overseas, so I haven't had the time to get the axle swap done, and didn't have (or make) the time when I was still stateside due to my schedule and other circumstances. No worries about asking.... and I did think about doing a D35/8.8 swap for ease of installation (are they ever easy??)... but the opportunity to buy the axles I have presented itself and I couldn't pass it up!
Sorry for sidetracking, folks.... wasn't trying to jack the thread, honest!
I bought mine for 700 and ended up having to put nearly $1,200 into it- It still doesn't run how I want it, but it's about there. I would do it, if it fails fix the problem and sell it for twice the price! But I love my baby, I can't get rid of it.
