blow plugs

i was workin on dads truck today and it started out well. he had a few glow plugs bad and i decided to do injector o rings as well as uvc wiring. everything was going great, the new orings were on and sticks were sitting on the bench. this is where my day went sour.. upon removal of the gp's, 2 were tight and i screwed them back in and out, just like i was tapping. long story short they broke and the elements are stuck in the head. i sprayed everything with pb blaster and tried the small needle-nose-vice-grip trick and nothing. so i called it a day. sorry for the long post just had to vent. im really not looking forward to pull the heads. any tricks i havent tried? pray for me

I'm a man, but I can change, if I have to, I guess...Amen.

Prayers sent.

If you have the Injectors out I seem to recall someone having a system on driving the plug back into the cyl. and fishing it out through the Inj. port.
The position of the piston, as I recall is an important issue.

The three names that come to mind are: Rubber Duck, TJ & C00nHunter.
perhaps they or someone else will know what I "Think" I'm talking about and lend you a hand.

the hole for the injector is very small, so I can see it being very difficult to get the glow plug end out, since it pretty much the same size as the hole. But worth a shot I guess. Might be easier to pull the injector cups out for those cylinders, then fish out the glow plugs, and just replace the cups, easier then removing the heads.

No, if you look in the injector bores, you will see brass cups. They are pressed into the head. OTC makes tools to take them out and put them in, its pretty much a big tap that goes on a slide hammer, you thread it into the cup, slide hammer it out. clean up where the cup sits in, install the cup with sleeve retaining loctight. Follow the manual on where to put the loctight.

Actually I think I'm wrong here, even if you pull the cups out, the hole is still the same size. So I wouldn't do what I suggested. Sorry about that.

Well i have a story like that. I was doing a 5 speed conversion, and ihad that all squared away cool right. right.
So then I moved on to my prob. with the engine not running. So i put glow plugs in. they all went like clock work but one. that one came all apart ,and left the end in side the head. it was corroded in there . So I was lucky. I was able to put some small needle nose vise grips on it super tight and a pry bar under the edge of the adjustment nut and a block of wood on the head for height and beat with my hand a few times real hard and i mean real hard and was able to pull it out. I dont no how but it popped it out that saved me from pulling the head.. amazing right pure luck. but anyways thats my story on that.

OK, I think I recall what I read. The person that had the same problem would take an instrument and drive the GP part just a silly millimeter into the head, then flood it with PB Blaster, let it soak then he would grab the exposed part and drive it back out.

He continued to do this back & forth method until it released and popped out. I think that he said the at the start he marked the GP so he could observe the progress.

Ya just gotta take your time and not become inpatient. Ya got a 50/50 chance that it will work.

Which Cyl is this on?

There was also a thread here on how to pull it out. with a simple homemade puller. Take a nut the same thread size as the thread on the glow plug, cut the nut in half, put both half's over the glow plug threads, now hoseclamp those nut halves together, now turn the nut down, when it contacts the head it will pull up the glow plug, you could keep putting washers under the nut for spacing as it comes out, use plenty of lube as to not break off the end of the glow plug.

just a suggestion:

why not use cylinder compression to push the glow plug out if you already have it unthreaded. i dont know how much oil and pb blaster leaked past the glow plug into the cyl. so hydro locking could be an issue and you dont want to do that.
if you do try it place a heavy towel over the glow plug so no one gets shot with a glow plug.
i'll say it again , dont shoot anyone with your glow plugs!

Yes but you could use a spacer to get you where you need to be, even though it has to be tall, it should work.
