Carb Issue... I think.

Got my '63 F250 unibody over five years ago. It is completely stock. It has always started right up hot or cold but has always seemed to have a little problem idling after it's hot. Had the engine rebuilt when I first got it and the mechanic said he had problems getting the carb (stock FOMOCO C3TF) to tune. Told me it was worn out'' and I might have to pump her a little bit when at a stop. Basically recommended I buy a new one. It wasn't too big an issue for the first few years and I did get some improvements from linkage cleaning, lube, and minor idle adjustments. However, in the last nine months it started to get worse. I was starting to have to pull the choke out some whenever at a stop light (after the engine was warm) in order to keep from stalling. I rebuilt the carb about 2 months ago and didn't see any significant improvement, plus never felt I could get it to tune very well. Since then it has gotten very hard to start - especially cold (pedal to the floor, crank, blub-blub-blub, stall... repeat). It is my assumption that it is not a fuel pump issue since it can backfire and make a flame in this process - #@%*!

-Any ideas or suggestions...?

Eric

Your scenario screams a vac leak to me. Closing the choke would richen the mix helping a lean condition. Check anything connected to the intake for a leak issue. If you have a vac gauge, use it now.

Check for wear around the throttle shaft. New bushings can be installed by a carb rebuilder, but you're probably as well off with a remanufactured unit.

If this is a 292...(you didn't say)...

C3TZ9510U .. 2V Carburetor (Motorcraft CA271)

Klimesh Motor Sales in Calmar IA has ONE: 563-562-3241

JST Automotive in Lebanon TN has ONE: 615-443-3086
-----------------------------------------------------
These carbs are NOS (new old stock) Ford originals.

The one Klimesh (they're a Ford dealer) has, will prolly be cheaper, because it's long obsolete, so the dealer cannot return it to Ford and is STUCK with it.

Usually dealer obsolete parts can be bought for the original dealers cost, which was prolly no more than 50 bucks when it was last available.

Doesn't hurt to give 'em a call and ask.

btw: This is the actual Ford part number, not the carb tag number which will not be the same.
