GEM module-Truck needs new brain

anyone know where I can find a gem module BESIDES a dealer? Have had the instrument cluster replaced a year ago and the imfamous door ajar light is back to haunt me. This, along with passenger door power lock and the autolight and dome light of course are acting up- I think this is typical for this type of problem unless the instrument cluster failing after one year.

My truck needs a new brain....

Even if you were to find an alternate source for the GEM, you'd still have to visit the dealer to get it programmed.

I was thinking the same thing. Is it throwing a GEM code? Maybe they can reprogram it, IDK?

<link href="S1O%7Eus%7Een%7Efile=S1Ostyle.htm%7Egen%7Ere f.htm" type="text/css" rel="stylesheet">Principles of Operation
The following is list of GEM controlled functions:
  • 4-wheel drive functions
  • front and rear wiper/washer
  • warning chimes
  • keyless entry
  • interior and exterior lamps
  • power windows
The generic electronic module (GEM) constantly monitors its subsystems for concerns. If a concern is found in one of the subsystems, the GEM will record the concern in the form of a diagnostic trouble code (DTC). The ignition switch position is very important to the GEM function. Often times, erratic or unexpected GEM function can be traced to concerns with ignition switch inputs.

Ignition Switch Positions
The position of the ignition switch is very important to correct GEM operation. The following is a brief description of five ignition switch positions.
When the ignition switch is in the RUN position, battery voltage should be present at the GEM RUN and RUN/ACC input terminals.
When the ignition switch is in the ACC position, battery voltage should be present at the GEM RUN/ACC input terminal only.
When the ignition switch is in the START position, battery voltage should be present at the GEM start/clutch depressed input.
The GEM module does not have an OFF or LOCK switch state input. The GEM will assume the OFF or LOCK position when there are no RUN, ACC, or START signals present.

Most of us don't have a buddy who is a Ford mechanic, so no one really searches much for a GEM. Does your Ford buddy think it's the GEM? I would think he would be able to tell you for sure if he put it on his computer.

I just went thru the quick learning process on a new, to me, 02 F350 CC DRW 4x4 I purchased a couple of months ago. In my case I found out pretty quickly that my '02 did not come with a GEM but infact a VSM (vehicle security module). Quoted part was between 160 - 375 !! from the local dealers.

The FTEPartsGuy came thru at ~$115 plus shipping. The VSM is located behind the dash, almost directly behind the radio mounted on the fire wall..

THE NEW VSM MUST BE PROGRAMMED BY THE DEALER !!! -- They charged me additional $135 for 20 minutes of work .

Now my autolight works, dome light works, radio turns off when key is removed and door open. The only thing left is that I have to fix three of the four door locks that don't work....

Hope that helps.

I'll try it. I think the vsm and gem are being used interchangably. maybe not but I'm still on the hunt for this part in the after market scene.
