ddec iv. good power but alot of prestone and power steering and oil. they all seem to pass by gaskets. 1 millon miles is time to rebuild but the engine owner wants to keep going.to rebuild its going to take pistons, ring, sleeves, gaskets, bearings, head check,valves.springs.connecting rods, crank grid , a **** load of money, time, and work. probaly even a cluth and shaft the list is big. so a little oil and prestone once a month is cheaper.
That sounds like a lot, I remember draining the oil out of one that we were about to do an engine swap on. It drained out 6-7 gallons of coolant then all the oil. He was wondering where all his coolant kept going.
The liners had gone to **** a long time ago and he kept driving it. There was no saving that engine, it had to be replaced.
I had my dd111 inframed at 990,000 1.400,000 miles on it now it has been a great engine.
I also have a dd1V it lost a piston at 590,000 inframed no trouble since.
My dd111 has for a long time in cooler weather it will start and run good for a second then it will start missing and smoking white smoke the colder it is the worse it is it has been dooing this forever way before it was inframed and doesn't do it in the summertime.
they all smoke cold. thats high hp engines. no glow plugs. till the engine temp does go normal you dont get full power and white and blue smoke. thats unburnt fuel
starmilt have you ever heard of puting the 3406 in a L-8000. the usa has a rare model L-8000 3406 6 wheeler 1982. here in canada only L-9000 6 wheeler 1982 and those are rare, very rare. its cheaper for me to put more power than buy a different truck.
People complain about everything, it's a big diesel engine. They are not meant to idle and drive slow, people complain about that all the time, I'm forever adjusting clutches and rockers, it's a big diesel engine it's going to be noisy!!

What does this have to do with cranking a motor. What does adjusting the clutch have to do with it. I could see if it needed an overhead but it doesn't.
I savvy the cold and unburnt fuel (I run canada and alaska a lot) but what I,m talking about is not normal it didn't do it when it was new and my other detroit doesn't do it nor my cat.
I dont know that I have seen a 3406 in a 8000 they were pretty in 9000 as was the big cam cummins but were laid over on an angle to get them to fit .
I'm pretty sure they had a different oil pan that was angled.
the S-60 1997 cold start in the garage was deadly till it warmed up.about 10-15 minutes. the smell stays in your clothes till you get home. even your wife says you smell of fuel.
I have worked at Detroit Diesel since 1992. I am in building mantainence now, but I was a dyno operater from 1997-2001. You should see a brand new S-60 start up! For the first 10 minutes you could not stand next to it in the dyno cell! This was back then of coarse.
It gets better mileage than my other one same top gear ratio always has.
They will smoke some at start up and the colder it is the worse it is but normal is not what I'm talking about.
I have owned this truck since it had 200,000 miles on it and it didn't start cutting out and missing until it had I'm guessing here 750,000 miles it doesn't miss the first couple seconds when starting cold so what could cause it.
I've had it at several detroit places but it doesn't do it after it warms up and they always tell me to record what it does and bring it back. I already told them so all I can assume is they don't know.
