start with fuel .check hose, filters,a plastic bag in the tank, bad hose that dont leak but are so bad they let small amounts of air in, a crack filter housing or missing o-ring or crack.you can check fuel feed with a gauge on those engines before the main pump there is a vavle like th one used to take oil samples from cat engines. if all ok then take out the pump and get it checked.if all ok then go to the fuel injectors .they are hydrlicly operated with engine oil presure and are adjjustable.1 quarter to haft down from zero like the chevys.injectors could be checked for presure opening and quantity.could also the the timing.with time parts wear.for the not doing it when cold is becauce of the extra fuel added by the pump.cold start solinoid gives it a little more then drops off slowly. take it to deisel shop that rebuild big diesel engines.they sould have all the equipment to test and recondition.you will loss the truck for 2 days .cheaper if you take the parts off your self but go there leave the truck over night conect test equipment and start it up see what happens then remove the parts and get them tested one by one.this testing will cost between 200 - 300 dollars
Yea paulo everything you mentioned has been gone over. I keep thinking air but it hasn't gotten any worse for several years and in the summer it doesnot do it at all.
Also it starts the same after sitting overnight or three months it is not actually a problem as far as running it but I would like it to be like it used to be.
Sounds like it could be an injector issue or maybe even a harness deal but then it would do it randomly. The injector can be bad and when it's cold it acts the worst until it warms up and starts to flow evenly. Could be... If you were close I'd tell you to bring it to my boss' shop and he'd diagnose it.
If you fellas wanna see a white smoke startup, you should come check out my 444 cummins!
She smokes white for the first few minutes (or so, depending how cold it is) then clears right up! I was a little worried at first, but did some reading and research and found that was normal, whew!
Yea I'm thinking I need a set of injectors but I think I'm going to wait and see what this economy does first. they supposedly tested them when it was inframed but with the miles on it new ones wouldnt hurt.

That's normal?!? We used to have an M123 army truck with the Cummins 300 V8 and it smoked so badly when cold that you could literally smoke screen a road to the point where people couldn't drive on it for a bit. Sorry for being off topic!
