gotta do some ic boot cleaning tommorrow. i've had the truck like 3 years and haven't done it once. just noticed the other day some black smoke from my tailpipe when i hit the pedal good.
trucks all stock with no ccv mode so i know the dirty ic boots are normal, right?
my question is whats everyone use to clean the boots once there off? "other than obviously a rag".
also my tourque wrench of 15 years just gave out on me and i haven't had the time "or extra $" to replace it.
--- what would be a good way to describe how tight to tighten the clamps>
You don't have to torque them down you can just tighten them up till they are tight but not too tight that they could rip. Take them off and clean them good inside and out with some simple green, you might want to paint your IC pipes while your interested if you want a cleaner looking engine bay. Also do your CCV while your in there so save it from happening again, taking off the plenum and cleaning the orange boots isn't too hard and a good idea. When you reinstall them be sure to put hair spray around the ends and the boots to make sure they don't blow off.
The spec is only like 70 in-lbs. You'll be fine without the torque wrench. Just remember you're tightening rubber boots down on aluminum tubing. Good and snug, but not a lot of muscle behind it.
I also like to use some of my daughters hair spray on the inside of the boots to give them a tacky surface. Helps keep them from popping off. Don't forget to clean the ends of the tubes as well.
Remove boots, soap and water, clean them inside and out, use hairspray around the ends and tighten them up. Once I got mine real clean, I touch them up while on the truck using Simple Green and a rag.
Couldnt have said it better than the fellas above! Thought all of my boots were blue...until I found the 2 orange ones! I do encourage the CCV...definitely wont have the problem again.
Be-careful with the Simple Green. I works awesome but has been proven to be extremely corrosive to aluminum if not 100% wash off. So just make sure you get it all off and you will be fine.
A clean Booty is a happy Booty, AH O, wrong site, lol. Maybe while your in there, do the CCV mod so them boots won't get gunked up again like Tristan above mentioned. The pipes are still white!!
I just took a look at my boots and I really need to do this too. When I did my CCV I didn't bother with cleaning the boots...I should have done it all while I was in there
got in a little while ago. took longer than i thought, about 4 hours to take'em out, clean'em and put'em back in. i also removed the driver's side battery/airbox to give me room for that bottom ic boot. clamp on bottom had a long nut on it that i couldn't figure out at first and was skweekin with every turn so i needed to get in there to figure out what was going on.
anyway everything did have a lite coating of oil on it. cleaned up real good. fired it up-took it for a ride and felt great.
while doing this i was thinking what are the real benefits of doing this other than being clean, and keeping excessive oil out of the turbo?????
The benifits to clean boots is over time the oil breaks down the rubber boots, cracks, makes them brittle from what i learned on here. Also they could blow off too with that oily mess.
About how long will it take to complete the CCV and IC boot cleaning? (FYI - Gas motors is all the experience I have; this is my first diesel.) Also my truck has 133k on it should the boots still be in good shape.

Buy a case of beer and take your time and make it last a loooog time. If you didn't take the foil off the drivers side tube, now would be a good time to that too. Have fun.
Maybe 2 hrs, tops. That's probably what it took me and I had very little experience with vehicles. And i did the foil delete. The longest part was getting the glue off the IC pipes.
