Changed a heater core for a family member on a 2001 f150. Was not hard at all. Thanks to those guys who put the step by step with pics on this site. Was a first for me to pull a dash on a f150. LIke i said not to hard just patience and took me about 10 hrs .Core is located left of the a/c plenum
Yes Ultra, Just pulled it enough to work, and you can see in the last pic, I just laid the steering wheel on the drivers seat. That gave enough room to work with.
Ha , ha , Steve, it was one of than moments where i needed grabbed what was at hand and the cord was right there.lol . SSG Beach- no the steering wheel does not have to come off. When you take off the bar and nuts that hold it up, it then will lay all the way down to the floor, but this truck had alot of aftermarket wires(alarm and stereo wires) that i just laid it on the seat and it gave me plenty of room. There are no special tools needed for this stuff Just your metric sockets and screw drivers. this wil help u http://my.voyager.net/~sscully/F-150...50_Exp_002.doc
I still say shame on Ford and GM for such a crappy situation. I can change my ole Bronco II heator core in 30 minutes, but the original lasted 17 years.
I have a 2003 F150 and thanks to all the postings here I have already dumped my 100K GOLD fluid at 50K in the Ford and replaced with same plus one tube of Stop Leak powder. I hope to never tear my dash apart, and I plan on doing this routine as long as I own my truck, which I hope is 3 more flushes .
Any way you can get it done quicker is AOK, but for me in the shop it is easier to remove the column and place the whole dash in the front seat. I am about 230 lbs and 52 yrs old so I need a bit more room to work.. LOL,
Congrats and hopefully you can do it next time in half the time.
