I didnt know where else to post this so here goes. My wife has this car and I am going to have to replace the engine in it. I need to know what i am getting myself into. I plan on getting a used engine and just swapping it out. how hard of a job is this anyone know or done it? what to look out for? I have changed out a few ford truck motors in the past but never a import before. Any advise is appreciated. thanks scott
I have removed and replaced several nissan altima and mazda engines. It wasnt as bad as I thought they would be. Main thing is to LABEL EVERYTHING so there wont be any guessing about what goes where. Read the repair manual section on engine and tranny replacement. real slow first..........real slow . Note the tranny doesnt have to come out only moved back to let the engine come up..Its a tight fit. You need to check the used engine good. If you can not hear it run first be sure to remove the plugs to be sure they are clean and not rusted from water caused by a blown head gasket. Be sure the place you buy it from deals with plenty of used engines and get you another one fast for the same money if the used engine you buy first for some reason is bad.
when you say read the repair manual section what exactly are you refering to? I do not have any manual on this car. I was hoping to just pull out this engine and drop in another. sounds simple but like I said I dont know for sure.
The suggestion to buy the manual is a reasonable one. SOMETIMES there is some trick to pulling a particular unit. Something particular to that model etc. You don't want to find out you broke the transmission case by doing something out of sequence etc. Hhhmmmm. Let me see--yes, right here:
There are others too, just google 'infiniti j30 forum'. Saw a link to a '94 service manual for a J30. I can't copy & past PDF file links, but you can find it, open it and copy it if need be.
Good luck.

Reason: clarify pdf link/file issue
You are correct . I always say that "If you dont have time to read and understand it from the manual you dont have time to do it right" YOu have to wiggle and move the trans in order to get the engine out and without a manual many people dont know where the starter bolts are. In fact the starter location is hard to find too. Theres alot to removing the engine but as I said its really not that hard. Im sure he can do it. It will save alot of money (maybe a thousand bucks) so 20 bucks for the shop manual and one hour to sorta study it first is a good investment.
