Oppose Federal “Cash for Clunkers” Program
Washington lawmakers are drafting a large economic stimulus package to help create jobs and rebuild infrastructure. They want to include a nationwide scrappage program which would give U.S. tax dollars to consumers who turn-in older cars to have them crushed, as a misguided attempt to spur new car sales. The lawmakers need to scrap this idea.
The stimulus package is being drafted right now. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) wants to introduce the bill on January 6 and have it approved by Congress by January 20, so that President Obama can sign it into law after he is inaugurated.

Oppose the Use of U.S. Taxpayer Dollars for Cash for Clunkers
• I am [calling/writing] to urge lawmakers not to include a “Cash for Clunkers” provision in the economic stimulus bill. Owners who turn in vehicles for crushing would receive a "minimal" payment to purchase a new car. This is a misguided attempt to spur car sales and claim that the country’s air quality or fleet fuel mileage is being improved.
• “Cash for Clunkers” programs threaten enthusiasts nationwide with the loss of valuable parts and parts-cars for repair, restoration, and customization projects. The programs also risk destroying classic, historic and special-interest vehicles, our American heritage.
• Cars turned in for scrappage often barely run, or are rarely-driven second or third vehicles that have a minimal impact on overall fuel economy or emissions.
• “Cash for Clunkers” programs will reduce the availability of affordable transportation and repair parts used by low-income drivers. It will also compete with the Salvation Army, the Purple Heart and other charities that rely on vehicle donations to raise money.
• “Cash for Clunkers” ignores better policy options. If Congress wants to act, support for repair and upgrade is a better choice and a win-win for consumers, dealers, manufacturers and repair shops. Significant emissions and fuel economy improvements can be achieved in older vehicles through relatively simple and inexpensive means: repaired/replaced exhaust systems, tune-ups, etc.
• We hope we can count on you to reject “Cash for Clunkers.” Thank you for your consideration on this very important matter.

I sent mine this morning .I prey everybody else sends one as well there are enough of us out there to make a diffrence.

 

Tomorrow it will be turn it over or else. Oh you cant afford a new car with all that smog crap we insist on for extra revenue ? Thats just too bad now aint it, guess you'll have to use our public transpo

Off my box.. lol So ready to turn in the 02 Dodge under this program and use the $$ to spruce up the slicks!!!

 

Told her I would go to the scrap yard and buy one for $100 and sell it to her for $500. Sounded reasonable since they like giving handouts.

Sent. This is why i'm glad we have organizations like SEMA.

 

I sent mine! There are many other ways to clean up th USA and there are other ways to use this money. I think that crushing old cars is not one of them!

Sent mine this morning. I really love the older vehicles that were made of metal, resisted door dings and bounced off of trees in the woods. Hell, some of them even took the tree with them... remember the Brady Bunch / LTD Wagon with the "redwood" on the side?

The older cars all had/have "STYLE". You can look from a block and a half and say, "That's a 60's Ford pickup", or "That's a 64 Impala", or "'57 Chevy". Now-a-days, you look and say, "Here comes a Nissan Alt.. wait, Toyota Cam... no; Honda Accor... Hyundai??" Point being, they all look like little capsules; PILLS if you will, and just like medicine as a kid, "Take it or else; you'll feel better afterward".

I sent mine a couple of days ago...sent a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOng letter explaining the POV of myself and many Im sure...

As for scrapping the 02 Dodge...wonder what it will fetch ya...

As for the Brady Bunch wagon...their wagon was a 67 Plymouth Satelite and in later years a 70-71 Plymouth Sport Suburban wagon...which is the one with the woodgrain...
Other cars used was the 70 or 71 Barracuda convert which I hear was recently restored. There was a 73 or 4 Caprice convert which was the last car and the only 'modern' GM used in the shows run...rememeber the driving obstacle course and the egg on the pylon....

Yes...I am an old TV junkie...especially where lots of cars were used...like Andy Griffith...all FoMoCo products...

Exactly. I sent him a message basically saying the same thing. It's like when people were calling Obama a Socialist (which he isn't) and then demanding the US Government invest in banks (which is).

 

I stand corrected, CS65. Thanks for catching that. I think I've watched Better Off Dead too many times and had LTD Wagon stuck in my mind. I do love the 67 Camaro though!
