Maybe this is a dumb question, but whats a tall deck 302?
Never heard of one.
Yes it is a dumb question but just so happens to be the only kind I'm
qualified to -guess at- (the best I can). :/ So thanks for asking it. ;)
Deck height is the distance from the top of the piston to the top of the
cylinder. Doesn't matter if it's a cast iron block like a 302 or a Motorcycle. :)
I'd never heard of a "tall deck 302" either. :)
But I fiNgure I knowed what it was tho. ;)
My '75 360FE just so happens to suffer from the same "problem" but not
because of the block but instead because of its short-topped pistons.

ps- my very first air cooled VW engine I rebuilt I guessed at the deck
height and guess wrong and had to take it apart again and shim under
the cylinders, I bought a deck height measuring tool right after that. ;)

Actually the smart move would be to deck the block, this has 2 purposes. First brings the deck back down to the old height and secondly straightens up the deck surface (squares the block ) which all blocks almost always need anyway.
