Axel bearing replacement

Axel bearing replacement
I have my third member pulled and axels out of course. While there out, can someone tell me the best way to pull the axel bearings. I have a shop press but would have to rig some weird contraption to get behind them. My thought on putting new bearings on was to use a pipe to slip over the axel and engage the bearing. Set this under the press and put it on. Any thoughts, suggestions, etc... welcome.

I assume this is a 9"? When I did mine, one bearing blew, so it was already off, and the other had to be cut off with a torch. For putting them back on with the press, I used 2 metal blocks to support the bearing with a gap between them for the axle shaft to go, and pressed on the center of the axle, between all the studs. Make sure you have the axle retaining plate on the shaft before you put the bearing on, I almost forgot that once.

You need to cut the retainer ring. A die grinder with composite blade does this nice at an angle. Cut almost the full way through then use a chisel and snap it the rest of the way.
once the retainer is off you can place two pieced of flat steel to catch the bearing and push it off.
To install it place the axle seal plate then the bearing then the new retaining ring. press till it stops.
If you want take 2 plates about 12x6x1/4 and cut a half circle out of each piece for the press off and on plate. reinforce these plates with heavy stock under them.

I replaced mine back in november when i did the rear brakes, PITA! When did ford change to the bigger axle bearing and the axle seals on the outside insted of running them on the inside? Whoever did mine before i got the truck gouged the seal seat area up and even after replacing them twice now they still leak some gear oil, I had to run a thin bead of RTV around the seat and seal, but it's still seeps some fluid on to the backing plate. YUCK!! Gonna have to fix it right someday.

Well I rigged up a 1/4 inch piece of flat steel. I did not have all the proper steel to support it correctly on my press. Ended up bending my piece. Resorted to the cutting torch as suggested and nibbled away, then cracked what was left with a hammer and chisel. A better cutting wheel is on my wants and needs list.
