I have an 85 F150 that is 2wd. I would like to make it 4wd. Dose anyone know how I should go about doing this? Are there any kits out there. How much trouble is it and is it worth the time and money?
Thanks
burton
hello, if you want to change your truck form 2-4 wd, i personally would just buy another truck. to acomplish this, you would have to take teh whole front end off, and put a new one on, it woul dbe a lot easier to just buy a whole new truck
Burton, coonboy aint far off, If you really think that you have to do this, I'D find a 80 - 96 4wd that had been rolled or wrecked that didn't bend the chassis, and take your sheet metal and bolt it to the 4X4 frame.
Resist the urge and buy one.

regarding swapping 2wd to4wd, i have to tell you that my experience with swapping [see entry under offroad and 4x4 of ford enthusiasts] is that it is easy to change the suspensions from frame to frame. once you have the wheels off, you only have to remove the radius arm to frame nut-1-1/8"-,the nut and bolt holding the ttb half to the framebracket, the shock mountingbolts, and the sspring retainer at top of spring. also, remove the sway bar from axles and truck and get it out from under truck to make pulling radius arm out from frame easier. you also have to disconnect tie rod ends from each side. i used brake line clamps to seal the hoses and disconnected the lines from the caliper.once tese steps are taken, it is simply a matter of reinstalling in the reverse order !!! i did replace all bushings with urethane ,and di u-joints while i was at it. i also found it easier to work one side at a time, by pulling slip joint apart [ this allows you to clean and re-grease anyway]. i did this on a gravel driveway, using a floor jack, jackstands for safety, and hand tools only! air tools would help greatly as does lots of wd40. the transmission swapping will vary, depending on your choice of units, but the hardest part is the suspension.
i think if you are swapping sheet metal, you will find [especially on different years and different fuel systems-carb vs efi- ] that it may require lots of time to get all systems in place and working properly. you will also need help moving steel- i did the suspension swap by my self in 2 days! hope this helps you with your decision and good luck.
