5 Spd Auto Tranny Operating Procedure

Have you noticed how when some things go wrong, they kind of sneak up on you and you're unaware until a significant event occurs?
That happened with the transmission in my '06 F-350 (24,000 miles)
Over some time I began to notice the beginning of a hard initial engagement after starting up for the day (no load, empty, in normal drive)
I wrote it off to cold engine high rpm until two weeks ago when, after hooking up my 12K 5er and in Tow/Haul, I experienced abrupt and harsh down shifts into first as I slowed to a stop for lights and stop signs. Then a few days later (not towing) I put it in Tow/Haul and experienced very harsh upshifts to final drive.
That did it for me. Took it to Ford service who reflashed my tranny with an upgrade. What a significant difference! Initial engagements are soft,up shift points are now noticeably at lower speeds, and all engagements are very smooth.

Now to the point of question.

The service tech told me to never use Tow/Haul unless working a load. Must confess I have used it a lot in the past just for grins. So what's the scoop? Nothing in the owner's manual states that I shouldn't.
Is there a tranny guy out there to shed some smart thoughts on this?

(sorry for the long post)
Thanks

I bet all they did was initialize your tranny so it will go through relearn. Does it say a tranny flash number on your reciept?

I use T/H often loaded and unloaded for engine braking down some big hills here, never had a problem, he is talking out his butt on the issue of not using unless loaded IMO.

Not unless loaded?? mhoefer is correct! You can use T/H whenever you want.

Make for fun running through the gears.

There is absolutely no reason for this. He's making it up as he goes along.

Thanks, guys.
Thems was my thoughts also.
Kinda thought service was trying to cover up unknowns.
