R4100 Service
R4100 Service
I have a 1999 F250 2WD 7.3 diesel with automatic trans. The truck has
72K. The R4100 trans has been flushed twice since I purchased the truck with 27K on it. The truck had not been driven very much before I purchase it the truck 3 yeas ago. Which I think has cause some other problems related to the Rear Diff but that was anohter story. The transmission flush was done at one of those oil change shops that uses the machine which allows the pump of the tranny to suck in all the good new good stuff and expell all the old bad stuff. My question is, if I took the truck to a actual transmission shop for a transmission service would they do anything besides a flush or drop the pan and change the filter? Is there adjustments that can be done to tweak the trans? Some sort of internal adjustment?
I have not been having any shifting problems but I have been hearing a little trans noise as I slow down to a stop. This noise is very slight and could be desribed as whirring and changes the more I slow down?
Thanks for any input..

I am far from being a tranny expert. I've always driven a stick, but since we recently got my wife an 01 7.3 with the 4R100 in it, I've been trying to learn.
Don't know about your noises, but you can get a shift kit to firm up the shifts and extend the life of the tranny. Another thing to consider is an upgraded transmission cooler.
For the shift options, you can buy a valve body from BTS or John Wood, or buy a shift kit like TransGo and do the valve body modifications yourself.
JUST DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM OREGON PERFORMANCE TRANSMISSION. I bought my TransGo tugger shift kit from them and it was missing a piece. After several emails with the guy where he kept telling me the part I needed was OEM and did not come with the kit. I even sent a copy of the install instructions with the missing piece circled. He quit responding to my emails. Of course just one 2 minute phone call with the TransGo tech line and a new spacer was on it's way to me free of charge. TransGo = Good, OPT = Bad. (Sorry for the rant.)
I'd suggest you also ask this quesiton up in the 99-03 7.3 diesel section, since there are more folks there with the same engine/tranny combo you have that can offer advice with what has worked for them, or what problems they've had.

I AM a trans expert, and in my opinion that's a waste of money if the trans is working well. Some people claim you must always drop the pan and look for problems. I believe the problems will find you, you don't have to go looking for them. The chances of dropping the pan and heading off a problem about to happen are almost zero. If there is enough crud in the pan that it's a problem the trans is already toast and an observant driver would have noticed it isn't shifting right.
