Question air ride system

Hey Guys,
I was thinking about installing an air ride system on my 02 Excursion. I already got a pricing on the front and rear bags, but will purchase the compresser at a later date. What do you guys think of this set-up? I'm trying to steady my ride, sway and ride quality. I also looked into a rear sway bar kit but I think the air ride can do the job of a sway bar. What do you guys think?

I put rears on mine and it helped a lot while towing. Much more stable

I installed the Firestone "ride right" air bags & compressor on the rear suspension of my truck, definitely helped smooth out the ride while towing. Is the air ride system a similar setup?

Rich - Mine are by "Air Lift" -Pretty much the same as the Firestone system IIRC Do you have to keep a minimum air pressure of 5 psi in yours?

What about the front axel? I looked at the Firestone "ride right kit, but will go with the air ride kit instead for front and rear axel. When installing this system will it require any drilling?

IMO an air ride (bag) set up will improve the ride the way you are looking for but not to the extent of eliminating sway like a good quality sway bar. If sway is of a major concern go with bags and a sway bar.

Bill,

Yep. I keep about 5-10 lbs in them when the truck is unloaded. 30-40 lbs with the 5th wheel hooked up.

Zaveirbr,

Whichever airbag system you choose definitely consider an onboard compressor. Much easier & nicer to change the settings on the fly or having to go find air. Just my 2 cents...

Are you guys pull camper or trailers on your 5th wheel hook up.?
I am thinking of getting a 5th wheel flat bed for work to haul with I would be in the 14k range on weight. And thought that air bags would be the way to go.

Brad,

The airbags made a big difference pulling our 5th wheel camper. Took the bouncing/shake out of the crapppy Oklahoma roads. I didn't say anything to my family when I installed them before leaving on a camping trip to South Dakota. About an hour into the trip my wife asked me if they fixed the roads or did I do something to the truck (again).

White Buffalo,
I notice that you have a 6.0 trans cooler on your truck and I was also looking to had this to my ride. What size tubes did you need for the installation? was it difficult to installed? was their any improvements in your boost or egt?

I just bought the "air lift" system front and rear for $455.00. I will get the onboard compresser in a couple of months. Guys the reason I'm get the air lift is because I notice that my leaf springs are sagging a some. I don't see the need to spend the money to replace them, if I can use the air lift to solve this problem. Do you guys agree? can leaf spring sagging cause a slight hesitation while accelerating off the line? I noticed the slight hesistation when it appeared that the rear of my truck is sagging some. Your opions are greatly appreciated.

Are you refering to the intercooler or transmission cooler?

The DI intercooler dropped my EGT's about 100 degrees unloaded, and @ 200 degrees while towing the 5th wheel. The boots came with the intercooler from Diesel Innovations (www.dieselinnovations.com) and was an easy install. The 6.0 intercooler will help some but I do not think it will drop the EGT's 1/2 as much. Then again, the 6.0 intercooler is way cheaper than an aftermarket intercooler. In addition you might need to change the fittings on the stock transmission cooler to make the 6.0 fit - some do, some don't.

The boost dropped a pound or two but the volume increased and the air charge is cooler so you can't really consider it a loss so to speak.

Here's the direct link to the intercooler from DI.

Sorry to post so much - I need more coffee!

The 6.0 trans cooler is a great upgrade also. Much bigger than the stock transmission cooler and dropped my transmission temps down quite a bit.

Sorry for the numerous posts
