I simply want to make my 02 ranger louder. It has 210,000 miles on the thing but i would like to to be louder. How can i get more power fairly cheep and easily?
I'll throw my penny in FWIW. Post some details of engine & tranny. 1st off though, tune it up & strip out excess weight it doesn't really need. Carpet, panels, radio, A/C stuff like that. Beyond that, it it would cost some cash to do much. The louder with power is easy though. Run a shorty exhaust of 2.25 to 2.5 inch muffler with matching exhaust pipe turned down or out the side behind the right door. The diameter depends on your engine. I usually figure 2.25 for 4 cyl, 2.9 or 3.0. Also, do care more about off the line take-off torque or WOT when your at cruise? Too big an exhaust pipe will choke bottem end slightly. Hope that gets you started.
I cut the muffler off mine and threw in some flex pipe on my '88 2.9L. I've got the loudest Ranger in my tri-county area. I don't suggest that too much though cause I have been pulled over for it. lol
Just put on a cheap cherry bomb, glass packs get louder with age as the glass starts deteriorating. The loudest bang for the buck. gears are a sure fire way to get more power, also get a bama engine programer. It cost 400 bucks put is worth every penny. Depending on what engine you have. You can get as much 15 hp and 20 pounds of torque with bama. A lot of us on here use bama, it's an awesome product. BamaChips Tuning
to get more power try a rebuild kit, as for as mufflers, throw on some JBA headers, h-pipe and flowmaster 10 series single chambers, believe me it will be loud I should know, and makes it run a heck of a lot better, assuming you have the 4.0. I dont have any kittys either. BTW.
Also loud isn't allways good. A loud raspy, ricey sound isn't as impressive as a deep controled rumble. Loud can just give you a head ach, bug the cops and your nieghbors, plus drown inside the cab and distort your stereo. There's a difference between sounding loud and sounding good, be carefull.
The Cherry Bomb does sound pretty good, but the fit sucks unless you run it out the side & then you may need a resonator to keep it under legal limit. If you like anything of the ricer sound, it will be really cool though. OTOH, it is very loud. I like Thrush glasspack, the longer the better. As far as ricer sound, I absolutely abhor the sound of Honda ricers. But Rangers sound great, about like a cone filter mod until you install the resonator - extremely raspy too. 2-1/4 should be the best fit & operation off the cat outlet. All you need is the flanges, flare piece, some pipe & clamps. Then 2 hangers (1 on either side of the frame to counter flop) & bolts assuming my suggestion just behind the right door. I had a large stainless resonator that had cost me around $30.
That being said, it's nice to get in my current truck with the true duals. Very nice & nearly right for 3.0L - I think it should have mandrel bends.
I type fast enough, just takes a while to drag the bits out of my cob-webbed head. That being said, I'm thinking of tweaking the truck with a resistor in series with the ACT after I find a new intake hose & other tweaks. Currently, I have the Onkyo blasting Run DMC (Class A mode) in retaliation to brother's loud racket upstairs though. My initial blast probably blew thier ear drums silly a bit... So down here, that's stronger than a few Starbucks.
Are you doing acid or what? I have no idea what your talking about, whats an ACT? Your talking over my head. You must remember, I'm just a hillbilly hee hee!!!
Huh? Which part. My blood's clean of anything even remotely medicinal & no alcohol. Run DMC maybe? It's the only decent rap music in existence for me. ACT is the Air Charge Temp sensor on the bottom of the air box. Putting a resistor of about 5.5K ohms (don't quote me- haven't looked it up in a couple weeks) in series with it is supposed to tweak the fuel & timing map with the computer. As far as hillbilly, an old Texan boss used to kid me about being one, even though I haven't been farther from here than Cedar Pointe, OH. Probably due to missing some teeth & the good ol' boy cleverness with any & all lathes along with other machinery.
P.S. Switched to the Judds. Man, I love the harmony of those two. Turn it Loose gives me goosebumps if I focus on them. Country kicks & rocks better than pop.

Reason: scrambling my spellings.
Hmm, so thats what an ACT is. In other words your to tight to buy a bama engine programer ha ha. I love that song by the Judds, "grandpa, tell me about the good old days". Cedar Point, thats down the road from me, actually, about 20 couple miles due west. At least you got out of your state, that alone makes you a man of the world in W,Va ha ha.
