Custom 7.3 Y-pipe wanted

What's the best way to have a new Y-pipe made for you? I want to put 3" mandrel bent exhaust on my '91 F250 7.3 (no turbo) but need a Y-pipe that's less restrictive. Ideas? Any plans or blueprints I can show a local exhaust shop to fab up for me?

Any metal/temp requirements?

I have a nice 3" exhaust from my old '93 Bronco (351W) and add more 3" tubing to make up the extra length needed from the Y-pipe back. It should fit fine over the rear axle since the F250 and Bronco both use the same layout.

You could either use this:

MagnaFlow 10778 - MagnaFlow Stamped Y-Pipes - summitracing.com

or this:

Cherry Bomb 429825 - Cherry Bomb Universal Y-Connectors - summitracing.com

and have a muffler shop build the other pipes...

Or, Walker also makes a "performance" y-pipe for their 7.3 n/a manifold back kit. Look up parts 55291 and 52273 at a parts place (rockauto.com has a schematic of the system). If you buy those two, it will cost you around $130 though, and it has a 2 1/2" outlet.

I have been under the impression that 2.5 is the biggest you can use for the y-pipe because of how it mounts/bolts to the manifolds. I do remember there being a member on these forums, cant remember who though that made a less restrictive y-pipe, and also would build them for anyone at cost. The current y-pipe is very restrictive, and the way he makes it Ive heard helped him a lot...

Right, I think the intake manifolds are 2.5" (PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG!) but the Y-pipe outlet itself can be whatever diameter you wish. I'd like to use the same 3" mandrel-bent setup I had on my gasser Bronco but (obviously) with a longer center section to accommodate the longer wheelbase.

GHunt - thanks for the MagnaFlow 10778 suggestion, that's a very good, doable idea. For it to work, the exhaust shop would have to fab 2.5" tubing from the exhaust manifolds to the 2.5" inlets on the Y-pipe itself, right? The Bassani Y-pipe I had on my Bronco (with matching Bassani shorty headers) was about 2.5 feet long.

Does anyone have pictures or exhaust diagrams to help me understand placement & sizing better?

I built one for my old NA truck (the one in my sig marked SOLD). Pretty easy to do, I have pictures and descriptions of what I did in my gallery. Here's a link
https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gal...&albumid=25337

For the downpipes from the manifold, even 2.5" is pushing it. The stock collars that attach them to the manifolds are sized for 2.25" pipe., BUT you can use the downpipes and flanges from the stock Y-pipe (instead of cutting up a turbo crossover pipe like I did) and build one like mine with a few parts from Napa (2.5" pipe elbows 2 x 45s & 1 x 90, and a 4" to 3" adapter).

BTW, one thing I forgot to mention. Having a spare engine sitting around that you can use for mock-up makes it WAY easier to fit all the pipe pieces together the way you want them

it'd be nice to add a pair of headerswith a new y-pipe. Are there any out there guys use that do not cost an arm-and-leg for our 7.3l?
I wonder if 460 headers could work...

Only ones I know of are Stan's headers, and 460 ones won't fit, no.

Hey SuperKram- Since people are saying 2 1/4" is the max off the manifolds, why not use the Cherry Bomb y-pipe I posted? It's 2 1/4" in, 3" out.

Also on those y-pipes, down near the bottom in the description, it says the Magnaflow one is 10" long and the Cherry Bomb one is 13 1/4" long. The aftermarket ones are usually pretty compact to make them easier to fit.

Does the Cherry bomb Y-pipe really look like that? The inlet/outlet sizes are what I'm looking for, but it does not look efficient at all. I always imagined an effective Y-pipe as having a beautiful, elegant tapering V, not a U-shape that's been jail-raped.

Does it really look like that? I dunno, apparently Cherry Bomb doesn't have actual pictures of their stuff anywhere.

I imagine cherry bomb's y-pipe is similar to this one- standard Y 2.5" diameter (stanY2.5alz)

2.25" is the pipe ID where it attaches to the manifold.

You could probably work on the clamp with a die grinder and get 2.5" pipe in it with a little time invested.

You would just have to look at bolt clearance and be careful you did not take out to much metal and make the clamp weak.

Back when I installed the 6.9 in my highboy I didn't get any exhaust components with it and made my own clamps crude but they never had to be replaced.

Something else to consider, is that none of the turbo kits out there will bolt up to headers if you ever want to add a turbocharger. Adding a turbo will still blow the doors off anything with headers.

David somewon said stans website shows headers for 94 up. If so have they designed some that will work with a turbo. If so they would have the potential for some serious improvements over the stoch manifolds.
