White smoke

On cold starts I am getting tons of white smoke. I know this has been gone over but I can't find it in the search. It takes forever to get it started when its cold I ordered a GPR was this the right part.

You can test the GPR with a multimeter. There are a total of 4 posts on top, 2 large and 2 small. To test the GPR, you can ignore the two small post. One large terminal will always be hot, the other will be hot when the glow plugs are activated (key in run position, engine off, cold engine). What you do is look to see if you have the same voltage across both large posts when the key is in the run position. If one has no voltage or significantly less voltage than the other, then you have a bad GPR.

If the GPR tests good, then you probably have quite a few bad glow plugs. Here is the test proceedure for glow plugs (and injectors), stolen from another thread:

To check the harness ohm it at the Valve cover connector on the outside.

Pin Out

G G I I C I I G G

G=Glow Plug +
I = Injector +
C= Injector Common

***The injectors fire with a 115VDC signal from the IDM do not pierce to wires to test.***

Ohm between "I" and "C" to test the injectors, should be less than 5.0 Ohms

To check glow plugs Ohm between "G" and battery ground should be between 0.1 and 2.0 Ohms

On your next cold start, jump across the two big posts on the GPR for a couple minutes. Then crank it and see if there is a difference. The GPR may be working but the GP's could be shot.

Or do what Curtis said........

Glad you figured her out- now just swap out the solenoid and you're good!

Picture getting lots of use lately.

The arrow labeled GPR is pointed on one post, the other is just left of that one with a black rubber cover over it.

Look at Barry's picture. Once you find the GPR, it gets easier to see what we are saying. With the key off, only one of the posts (with the black boot on it) will have 12v power constantly.
