I originally planned on a 545 big block and already started rounding up all the parts to make it work. Then when gas prices went through the roof, I decided to hold off and do a pretty neat 300 I6 instead.
Right now, I'm still gathering up some parts but the sheet metal and interior is nearly complete. I will probably be dropping the truckcab and box on a car frame to make it easier to lower and handle better. Still searching for a good donor vehicle.
And just for the record, in an effort to keep it low budget I decided to go with 20" steelies. Dodge ram factory spares as a matter of fact. I've already rounded up 2 and have a lead on 2 more. Best part is, they are 20 x 9 and have a 5 x 5.5 bolt pattern so they'll fit the Ford axles.
I'll post some pics up once I find a donor and actually start the fabrication and assembly. I'm looking to build a sweet looking lowered truck that's good on gas and I can drive any where.
Sorry for the thread hijack.
Have you considered putting a crown vic front crossmember on the original frame? It might be less work, and I think will give you rack and pinion steering too. Have you considered all you will run into with a frame swap? At first it sounds like it will just take body mount brackets to mount the body to the donor frame, but I have a feeling it may get more complicated than that in the end.
Yeah I saw the thread that you are referring to about the Crown Vic swap. Only problem with that is that I don't have a short bed frame (yet) and then I'd still have to graft on the CV front end.
Generally speaking, a car frame is naturally going to be lower than a truck and not as tall enabling the body to sit lower. The entire body will be channeled to sit over the frame for the "in the weeds" look.
I'm still weighing a lot of options, and haven't really made a descision yet. I can fabricate anything I need so just because one way or the other is easier is not going to determine how I go. It's more about the ultimate out come.
I've also contacted Alston Engineering about a totally custom narrowed frame with a 4 link rear and a strut front end.
Bit OT but is a '95 mustang a suitable donor for a front clip?
i kinda doubt it. Chances are the front end wouldnt hold up to the weight. since the front end was built for a lighter car. Rather than the crown vic front end was built for a heavier car.
