Should be the same axle, if I was going through the trouble of swapping gears I would install a good locker unit. If you want a fun time you should go for a ride in my V8 powered Jeep. Keep in mine changing the front gearing is going to be a PITA

That would be a help, would also be the perfect opportunity to replace all the front u-joints, replace seals and repack wheel bearings.

If he's not to sure, I don't think I'd let him install something as important as your rear differential.

The axles are the same though.
If he's just installing the axle, whooptie do, you can do that yourself.

10.25 sterling is a full floating rear axle. They were in all the 250's and 350's i believe since at least 87.
Ford 9 inch is a semi full floating rear with a carrier setup.
and 8.8 is a non floating rear.

I know what you mean. When you get ready to dive into the front end be sure and check the axle pivot bushings and the bushings in the frame for the shackles. I don't know if the gassers have the same problem as bad but the weight of these diesels seem to squash the shackle bushings completely out and then its riding metal on metal. I replaced all my spring and shackle bushings with polyurethane bushings and that seems to hold up.

I'm not 100% sure on that one, but i think mine is messed up.
My drivers side tire sticks out about 1/2 inch further then the back one. Could be one of those bushings, or a bent bracket. I have not figured it out yet.

It's a DIY system. The kits were too expensive. I did a writeup on it in one of the forums. I have about $600 into it and so far it's one of the better mods I've done.

When I got my signature truck it had 4:10s My previous truck a 95 F250 had 3:55s and I couldn't get used to the high RPMs going down the highway in my new truck. I use my truck mostly for highway travel so I had it converted to 3:55s. I would never buy another truck with 4:10s I like being able to travel 74 at 2k rpms instead of 60 at 2k rpms.

Joe mentioned she's got 35" shoes. So the 4.10 put her at the 3.55 anyways.

yea, close enough. I'd still run 3.55's with 35's though.

Not me, I like my 4.10s with 35s . My wifes 97 powerstroke with 3.55s and 32s sucks especially when you put a few thousand lbs behind it. I'll admit my wifes truck is great if you want to run over 130 mph. We do have to run 75-85 mph for the best mileage. At this point I'm seriously considering installing 3.73s but trying to talk her into lifting it 4" with 35s. If that happens it will most likely get the gears out of my truck and I'll install 4.30 or 4.56 gears in mine since it does most of the off roading and heavy hauling.

The little voice in your is saying 4.10s go with the 4.10s
Besides if you start going with tires bigger than 35s you will start loosing your turning radius
