4X4 engage problem

I've read and read about this problem on this forum, but have not found a situation quite like this one. My neighbor has a 1997 F-150 4X4 with the electronic select ****. His hubs only engage automatically, no manual engage. Here's the scenario:

About 30 degrees outside, engine running, switch to 4HI. I hear a click behind the dash (vacuum solenoid), then 4-5 seconds later I hear 5-6 additional clicks about 1 second apart. A few seconds after that, the 4X4 indicator comes on. However, the hubs are not engaged at this point (verified by driving). Now, turn the selector back to 2HI. The 4X4 indicator does not go off. You have to turn the truck off and back on again, and then the 4X4 indicator is off.

Engine running, neutral, switch to 4LO. Same sequence of clicks behind the dash, I hear the clunk under the truck, and the 4X4 and LOW RANGE indicators come on. Hubs are not engaged at this point (verified by driving). Switch back to 2HI, I hear the clunk under the truck and the indicators turn off.

He had the motor an the transfer case go out last year and had it replaced. It didn't work so he had it replaced again and it worked for a few months until a time when he needed it (out deer hunting). He switched it back and forth between 2HI and 4HI several times and finally, it worked properly. Then, it worked properly for a couple weeks after that and then went back to the situation described above.

Whew . . . . .

Both of these situations are repeatable.

Any ideas? I assume there's a vacuum leak in the hub engage circuit, is there a common place that this happens? Is the motor just working slowly? Is this common?

Thanks.

John.

I am still fighting my four wheel drive problems. It won't engage when needed in hi or low. Then one day messing with it it got stuck in 4lo. I had to disconnect the battery to get it out. So I can't help you.

Sounds like water may have gotten into the GEM module, which is located behind the fuse box. Some trucks develop a leak at the bottom of the windshield and water will come in and short out the GEM module. Other Felloas have also seen there headlights come on by themself.
