Thanks for all the responses to my previous post about the engine rattle. Based on evidence so far, I am going to replace the pass side cam phaser and see if that fixes the noise. I found the part online for a good price and a friend will lend me the chain blocking tool so I think I'm ready to tackle the job. My big question now is- can I remove the valve cover without discharging the AC. I know it would be easier with the AC out of the way but the AC works great now and I'd rather not mess with it.
Also, is it possible to remove and clean the cam timing solenoid valve body with the valve cover removed? Based on the Ford tech video that explains the operation of the cam phaser, it looks like a dirty or clogged solenoid valve body would cause problems with the cam phaser and the cam chain tensioner since the tensioner appears to be downstream of the solenoid in the oiling system.
