I've noticed for a couple of days now when I am accelerating, usually over 60 mph, my battery light flickers. Could it be my alternator starting to go? I'd just like to get it taken care of before it leaves me sit somewhere. Thanks.
That's what my light was doing before the alternator gave up the ghost. Double check your battery connections to make sure they are good and tight with no corrosion.
MIne was flickering and it was one of the two wires coming off the top of the alternator was shorting out the alum. housing, down about 1 &1/2" from the connector.. These two wires need to be a bit longer from the factory..
Another thing to check is the main wire harness that goes over the top of the driver's side valve cover.. read posts where it will rub on the cover and short out..
Did you check your voltage while the engine was idling at the batteries? You should have about 14.3 volts.. If so, your alternator is probably working OK and it is maybe a wire shorting..
I don't have a voltimeter. I'll have to get my hands on one. Do you just touch it to the battery terminal?
Yes, if it don't read around 14.1 to 14.3 volts with the GPR off, you may have and alternator going south. I got lucky with my truck, I do have an aftermarket voltmeter in my gauge pod and noticed while driving it was reading 11.5 volts. I looked at the dash and the light was flickering, then went steady after 20 minutes of driving.
Mine still hasn't gone steady it just flickers when I accelerate then when I let off it goes off. And it hasn't done it the past couple of days now. I can't figure it out. Maybe I have a short somewhere.
Check the voltage Adam. Last time I let my light come on and go off for a few days it ended up killing one of my batteries. If you ignore it, you'll end up needing a new alternator and new batteries.
Have you checked the connections at the batteries and the back of the alternator to make sure nothing is loose?
another option over a new one is if you have an alternator & starter shop nearby. i have a local guy who will rebuild your alternator for less than the cost of a new and up the wattage or voltage or w/e and give a lifetime warranty on all his stuff. never had one of his rebuilds fail me yet.....
Thanks for all the help guys. I just checked the battery and alternator connections, nothing looks wrong there. I'll have to get my hands on a voltimeter ASAP.
