Okay I really hate to do this but I am trying ot get everyone's opinion on this, before I go do this. I have almost 30,000 miles on my FX4 Screw with the 5.4. Do I change the spark plugs now, or do I gamble and wait. I have decided that if I do it now, that I will be going with the Champion plug (thought about the Brisk, but I have no engine mods, except for a K & N, and that doesn't constitute really for anything.) Once again I am sorry for asking this again, and thank you all in advance.
Yea I read that thread also, I guess what I am asking is are there more people out there changing them earlier than later and if so what are their success rate? I am just banging my head against the wall trying to decide whether to do it now or not.
I guess I would do it sooner than later. My experience is I did mine at 37k and had two break. I did follow the TSB. With the right tool I was able to get the broken ones out out with no problem. I used the champion plugs and though some people have said they have had problems with those plugs I have not.
If You Do It, Just The Rotunda Tool Just In Case One Gets Stuck, It's Pricey But Its Better Than A Dealership Doing It And Then Giving You The Call.....were Gonna Haft To Replace Your Head On Your Dime........bs!!! Good Luck
I tryed to do mine today.04 F-150 5.4 97000 miles. Took 6 hrs. to do #1 plug $11.00 for the plug $80.00 for the tool to get the broken piece out + a camara to find the broke porcelin and get it out. Need to find out how to de-carbon the cyl's befor I do the rest!
The plug came out fine ,its the metel tube that brakes off.the carbon builds up on the plug and it will not turn out with the top of the plug now you have a hole with the just the bottom or electrode stuck in the hole. when you get bthe tub out you push the porcelin into the cyl.
I would vote yes...i did mine in the mid 20,000 miles and it worked out great....none broke, and came out easy as pie....you're going to find half of the people on here will say wait till 100,000 miles and know you'll probably break some.....and the other half that will say take the rare chance you might break one now and save yourself from almost surely breaking them later.....There are a whole lot of threads on here about this....and there isn't any one of the threads that came to a conclusion either way....
It all comes down to if you think that preventative maintenance is worth it or not...

You can do 1 of 2 things. get a can of GM top End cleaner, or do as I did. I ran Marvel Mystry Oil in every tank for a month prior to changing my plugs. My truck had 44,000 miles on it, and every plug came out very easy. I broke them loose with a ratchet and hand spun them the rest of the way out.
I wouldn't wait on changing the plugs, its a matter of paying a Little now, or paying alot later. The engine is going to just build up more carbon over time. Which is just lock the plugs in place.
I did something similar to motown except i ran lucas fuel injection cleaner for about 1k miles before the change. i also took a 150 mile round trip the day before to help burn the carbon out. Then i used pb blaster to soak the plugs. i did the change at around 49k and had no problems with any plugs.
