With the recent snow storm I've figured out it's time for a new windshield gasket. I have a few choices and would like some advise from anyone who's done this. I can get a gasket from DC for $40 + shipping or Johns Fun Hundreds for $37 + shipping or I can have it replaced by Safelite for about $130. Or have the whole windshield replaced (mine has a tiny chip in it) for $295. Any advise would be appreciated.
Thanks
Beware of the chip. There is an excelent chance you won't get it out and back in with out it cracking.
I relpaced the gasket on the windshield of my '59 and it really wasn't too bad but I had someone helping me that had done it many times before. I don't think you would want to try it with out extra hands and the more experienced the better.
I don't think the windshield in the "Slicks" wrap around as much as the '59 does so that should make it some easier.
Buy a new gasket and give it a try. The worst is it will crack and you will already have the new gasket for the new windshield.
I highly recomend the the gasket from Carpenter. That is what I got and it was very soft and pliable. Others may be just as good.
Rob, I would stick with DC...and have Safelite on 99 or down by the truckstop...or where it used to be do it...the chip is sooooo tiny its hard to see....I would definately try to save that glass....but have them deal with it as far as removing and so on...
Have purchase from both suppliers mentioned but when it comes to gaskets, seals, and weatherstrip suggest going with DC.
Had simular circumstance with windshield on my 65, however, the chip looked like it could develope into a crack so decided to replace it. Had the auto glass shop order and install.
Posting a link to the articles/specs forum on 'tips for installing window gasket' . After review you may want to consider installing the windshield with the crack yourself, if it does not work out you can have the auto glass shop order and install a replacement, just don't damage the gasket. Recall having to drive my 65 some 25 miles with out a windshield, that was an experience. Also, topic has come up on occasion, may want to try running a search and narrow field to the 61-66 forum. Recall couple members mentioning a sealant is not required, the auto glass shop that installed the windshild in my 65 did, this was few years back and never has leaked.
National parts depot has windshield gaskets for 27.50 and and a reasonable $8 shipping. I dealt with them before and they get it to you really fast. If it has a chip in it you should replace the whole windshield since it is going to crack worse. It is pretty easy if you do it yourself and will save you some money. I got a windshield for $150.
Yea i'm thinking I should have the chip fixed first at least it's really small and right behind the rear view mirror. Anyone in the south sound area that's done the replacement out there? I'd like to try it myself it can't be that bad I've replaced several side and rear windows but never a front. Don will attest to this, No gasket would be about as good as what I have now. LOL He had to ride with me to monroe and back with it dripping all the way. Sorry Don!
Rob
no problem Rob...LOL...but rememeber I told ya the windshield glass is alot heavier then the back glass by a longshot...I have a safelite down here that put a windshield in my Ranger but they didnt clean the old sealer off...or use enough to reinstall so I have a nice leak in the top right corner...thus it and my 65 are high and dry under cover.
The 65s glass isnt as simple to put in as my Ranger is...and then you have the trim to make it all the more difficult as I have heard that the trim has to go on after the glass is in the rubber and before it goes in the cab if I understood the posts correctly...and the other thing is the trim getting beat up also by those who arent familiar with the setup...
I would get the chip fixed first...in the meantime I would get some dum dum to pack in the upper are where its leaking...

Make sure you get the correct windshield weatherstrip...there are TWO different types.
C1UB8903110A .. W/Shield Weatherstrip-Standard Cab-Use without windshield mouldings / Obsolete
County Roads Ford in New Martinsville WV has one Genuine Ford NOS original.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- C1TB8103110B .. W/Shield Weatherstrip-Custom Cab-Use with windshield mouldings / Obsolete
Cain Ford in Cornelia GA has one Genuine Ford NOS original.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Since both the weatherstrips are obsolete, the dealers can no longer return them...and so...are STUCK with them.
Usually you can buy them for well under the original list price.
There is no substitute for the real thing.
Carpenter may be using the original molds, but that does not mean that he's making them in the US of A.

Bill I will give you credit for knowing your part numbers, but what's your point on this one?
Dennis Carpenter of Concord NC has a very long standing reputation for making the best replacement rubber for our trucks that can be found. They have been making rubber replacement parts in NC for years.
I have had a tough time trying to get the chrome trim window back in even with the proper seal. I did it once and after that they go back in without it, maybe I just give up too easy.
But if you want to do it yourself and haven't before:
The window seal is easy to install, just wrap it around the window, then run a piece of eighth inch nylon cord (like lawnmower starter rope) around the groove with the end pieces meeting at the center of the bottom. Set the window in place (bottom in the channel) and pull the cord to pull the rubber through. I like to work both sides evenly up and finish it on the top. And it helps to have a slave pushing the window in from the outside, but I have done it with no help too.
When you are removing the old seal just cut it with a razor knife, its near impossible to get out unless you have a shattered windshield.
SJ, Should I use a sealer as well and if so what kind should I use.
Thanks
Rob
I never have, they won't leak until they dry rot. I have had far more problems with glue in type later model windshields than these trucks, a design that should never have been changed IMO. I just make sure the the surface is clean first.
Cool thanks for the info. On the chrome, I have to install it before I put the windshield in from what I've heard. Is this the way you were trying? A far as getting the old one out it's about to fall out i'm always afraid if I hit the brakes too hard it's gonna go flying.LOL
