Whats the best programer for a 04 5.4? looking to gain alittle more power and see if any gain in fuel milage. I was told to get the SCT Xcal2. Any thoughts?
I use the Hypertech and have been happy with it except for some reason it doesn't have the ability to function with the 5.4L on all of the options. Didn't know that until it came to the house and I opened the box and read the instruction manual.
I've tried Superchip's Blue chip and Maxtuner. I now have Sniper's Special Forces suite and I really like it. It is the equivalent to an end user version of SCT. I write the tune through their software, upload it and check how it runs with the Recon Data logger.
SCT no longer makes the XCal2 if I'm correct. They offer the SF3 and the X3 which are the replacements methinks. The SF3 is preloaded with tunes from SCT, and the X3 must be loaded with 3 custom tunes from an SCT dealer or whoever. If you want performance and economy then look into the SCT. You can have them create a tune for economy on say, 87 octane fuel; and then another tune for performance on 91 octane for example.
I plan on ordering an X3 for myself as soon as I get home from visiting relatives for the holiday, probably this Wed. If you still haven't made a decision, I'll probably post my thoughts on the tuner after I've got it in my truck ('02 F250 5.4L).
Oh and like high ho silver said, even though it may state that certain things are adjustable, many of the adjustments typically apply to other vehicles, because tuners like the X3 are manufactured to fit most Ford gas vehicles including Mustangs and F150's.
dumb question, i know. but what the hell good does a programmer do for a gasser? this would be about the first i've ever heard of it...
A little! Haha but it is better than nothing. From speaking with owners of other gas trucks with programmers, they claim you can feel it seat-of-the-pants.
Main thing is the TC/Trans strategies/timings and WOT fuel enrichment. The stock tunes on the gassers are not that great and never allow the truck to go into open loop at WOT.
Here is an explanation from Mikes site which explains it better than I can. V10 Ford F250/350/450/550
