i got the code 84 when i pulled the codes. it said it is a egr vacuum regulator circuit failure. the truck runs good except at times when i stop it will shake at idle then die. i have done a full tune up on it. it is a 86 with the 2.3 four cylinder. any help would be great. thanks. tracy
I'm not as good at rangers yet, BUT, rough idle and a 84 code sounds like major vacuum leak. get a piece of hose that fits the EGR port and see if it moves the valve when you apply a little vacuum. Another problem is a worn out leaking hose somewhere or the EGR valve is so crudded up it won't shut off the exhaust gas to the intake.
it has been 20 years or so since I last owned a carb car.
i checked for vacuum leaks and none found. i took off the egr and cleaned out everything i found. runs good and idles fine. just once in awhile it will studder and try to die.
Have you tried changing out the EGR vacuum control solenoid ? On my 87, its on the passenger side fender wall just behind the battery and in front of the relays. it has some wires going into, as well as a red and green vacuum line (I think these are the colors). I can't imagine them costing too much.

i unhooked the egr line and pluged it off. drove it for 2 days and alot better. i searched all day yesterday for the new control solenoid. the dealer cant even get one. he said to try orielys auto. i did and they had it. i got the control solenoid and the air idle controller too. too cold today to mess with it, may warm up this afternoon. if so,i will put them on and get back to you. it was about 80 dollers for egr and 60 for the idle one.thanks, tracy
i changed them out. same trouble. i now have vacuum at 3000 rpm to the egr. i shut it off and put a vacuum pump on it to watch the egr valve to see if it will open.it will not move with vacuum on it.i am going to get one tomorrow and swap it out and see what happins next.
