oil weight?

the owners manual for a 2005 jeep wrangler with a 4.0l straight 6 recommends 10w30 for all temps till 0 degress and 5w30 from anthing below 0 to only 32 degrees...shouldnt the 5w30 work in temps higher than 32 and be the same as 10w30 at operating temp??? also can i mix one qt of 10w30 with 5 qts of 5w30?

I just run Mobil 1 5w30 year round in my Jeep Rubicon.

The guys in my Jeep club I belong to all run 5w30 year round.

Not real technical, but no one has had any motor problems due to poor oil.

i was thinking of doing the same thing...so 5w30 year round would be fine even for the summer...what is the difference between 5w30 and 10w30 at cold and operating temps?

5w30 just flows eaier, hence faster when its cold out, and gets oil to the parts that need it quicker.
Also makes the engine crank over easier when its cold out.

I see no reason to not just run 5w30 oil year round.

Yes, a 5W-30 will still be a 30 weight when warm. Here's the only thing I have against using a 5W-30 if I don't have to.

A 5W-30 has more viscosity improvers (or something) added to it to allow a thinner weight when cold, and still be a 30 weight when warm. The bad thing about them is that they shear down easier. A 5W-30 will be thinner when warm after 3 or 4000 miles compared to a 10W-30. I prefer a 5W-30 when it's going to be 40 and below all the time... otherwise, it's 10W-30 for me.

Synthetic is another story. No point in running a 10W-30 synthetic. Synthetics are much tougher to shear. So, when running a synthetic, a 0W-30 is the best way to go, or a 5W-30.

well i just changed it and used Quaker State 5w30 which i feel more comfortable in the winter...there have been some below zero days already and it takes a bit longer to build oil pressure so it should be better now...i think ive always used QS 10w30 and changed every 3k mi

i knew there had to be some disadvantage of 5w30 or else why use 10w30 at all

Your newer engines have tighter tolerances than the older engines did, thats why mfgs. are going with the lighter weights-ie..my new 2007 Escape requires 5w20 syn blend all year (which it will get to keep my extended warranty good), and the "tech" on oil, and engines, and engine life is better than its ever been in the past..Years back I used nothin' but Quaker State, but now with the price of oil, lets just say I found something I feel comfortable using...

A lot of people think 5W-30 is 'thin' while 10W-30 is 'thicker'. In reality, there are some cases, such as Mobil1, where the 5W-30 M1 is thicker than the 10W-30 at warm up.

Castrol Syntec 0W-30 (AKA German Castrol) is thicker than both the 5W and 10W-30 M1. BTW, yes, I love GC's properties.
