The original rearend in my 80 was a 9 inch 3.50 gears, and it had 31 splines. But pulling a axle and counting is the only way to know for sure.
I remember putting a used gear set from a early 70's Bronco in it, and I had to change the carrier piece that holds the ring gear, because the Bronco had a 28 spline axle, and the 31 spline axle would not fit through the smaller Bronco carrier. It all worked out in the end.
