Got the 300 back from the machine shop. Bored 0.030", new pistons & rings, new cam & clutch/pressure plate. Finished putting all the accessories & dropped it back on the motor mounts.
Put in 6 quarts of oil. Going to prelube it before starting. Took the gear off the old distrubutor so I could use the shaft to turn the oil pump with a drill motor.
Which way do I turn the drill? Clockwise or counter clockwise. Looks like the books indicate distributor rotation is clockwise, so wouldn't the oil pump turn the same way?
Cant you just turn the engine over with no fuel and spark?
Not a good idea for a new engine. You want to pre-oil all lifters and get oil into the galleys before cranking engine.
I would imagine the pre-oil needs the drill to be in reverse on a six, as it is on an v8, but you may want to wait for confirmation on this..
However, you won't hurt anything by trying it in either direction. Just look for the oil being pumped up through the lifters.
It's done. Shot some oil with a squirter can into the filter inlet(which is the discharge of the oil pump). Used the distributor shaft(minus gear); turned clockwise. Within a minute, the drill loaded up and oil started coming out of the pushrods. Ran it until I got oil out of all the pushrods and shut it down. Waiting on the new Offy intake, DUI distributor & Holley 390...got EFI manifolds but might go with the Hooker header......Yahoo!!!!
Cool. If the engine is going to sit while you are waiting on the other parts I would recommend priming the oil system again before you fire it up since the oil will drain back into the pan over time.
It only takes 10 minutes to go through the priming process and that can save you a lot of time and money in the future.
