i am repairing the rear cab corners on my 1951 is it supposed to have a bottom to it?does anybody have a picture of how it is supposed to be thanks elliot
Elliot, I think you are likely talking about the space between the outer radius of the rear cab corner and the floor pan? If that is the case, yes there is supposed to be a formed piece in there, it is spot welded to a bent tab on the floor pan as well as the back of the door post and three or four spots along the radius of the bend. If you are doing a restoration then I think you may have some trouble locating the contoured pieces. When I removed mine I just cut new flat radiused pieces the same outline as the original without the contour and re-welded them back in place of the originals. I'll see if I can dig up some pics. Also note that these things weren't perfectly sealed originally so plan on using copious amounts of seam sealer here. Same with the front cab corners. These great big gobs of sealer fell out when I was rolling my cab around, and looked like a big hunk of dog doo.
I replaced both cab corners in my F-4. I made all the patches. The piece you're looking for wasn't that hard to fab, i just drew out the center dimensions and hammered the edges down. Here's the best picture I have on my home computer. In in this picture I hadn't filled in the rest of rusted area yet:
Here's a picture after I welded in all of the patches:
He's looking for the piece that goes under the corner, your piece doesn't include that, does it? That piece, like the toe board area of the '48-52 trucks, is the most prone to rust damage but no one makes them.
Northern Classics makes patch panels for the '40-47 but not for the later models.
