clunk noise from front suspension
I recently purchased a 1994 F250 with the 7.3L gas V8, automatic, 2wd, 60K miles. Great truck!!
QUESTION: At very low speeds (under 2 or 3 mph) while turning sharply, I hear a quick "clunk" sound from the front right suspension area. This happens only when entering a driveway, driving over a slight divot or going over a bump. Could this be a leaf spring bushing? Or??? Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you,
BigRich

I currently have a 1994 F250 4x4 and it had the same noise you are talking about. My dad has a 1990 F250 and it did too.
What he did was have the camber bushings replaced on both sides to get his tires back into specs (since all F250's sag after awhile) and this took care of the clunk.
I just re-arched my front springs and added a new leaf for a total of three. As part of this, new rubber leaf bushings were installed. My clunk has been much reduced. I need an alignment because I have severe positive camber now and I presume after the new camber bushings are installed, I will no longer have any clunking noise while going slow over curbs or dips.
By the way, I sure like the leveling affect the add-a-leaf gave me.

Appreciate the reply. The local front end shop (while replacing my shocks) checked my noise and said "fuggetaboutit". Said is is caused by where the top and/or bottom of the compressed coil sits. Also said the steering stops can make noise. He said grease in those places could help the noise, but only for awhile.

LAST EDITED ON 18-Mar-01 AT 03:10 AM (EST)[p]I have done many alignments and can tell you how to find suspension noises. Lift the truck up on a lift and take a large rubber mallot and strike the bottom of each front tire to simulate a road shock and listen to see where the noise comes from. It may be best to have a helper strike the tire while feeling for the source of the noise.
Many older Ford trucks (with king pins) would develope a ringing sound when hitting a mear crack in the road. It would sound like loose washers, like when the shock bushings wear out completely.
When I struck the tires with a mallot I would pinpoint the source. The coil spring was loose at the bottom causing it to ring the large washer. All I had to do is torque the nut that anchors the coil spring to the I-beam. This elliminated the problem completely. So try this technique.
