We have a 1998 Explorer and it does NOT like the cold weather. When I start it in the morning it idles really high then really low going back and forth until it warms up, sometimes stalling on the lows. The service engine soon light is also on. After spending $700 dollars at the service station I am about ready to trade it in. This happens every winter when the temps fall under 60. It is worse this year though. The light never used to come on either. We have had it back to Ford a couple times last winter and this month to our local mechanic. He changed the oxygen sensor, rear oxygen sensor and the air control sensor. Can anyone think of the next part to try. Could this be happening because it is only driven a couple miles a day? It only has 26,000 miles on it. HELP!!!
My 98 used to do the same thing. It was intake manifold gasket leaks. This usually will set lean codes for both banks. My Expy is a 4.0L SOHC. A sluggish IAC can also cause similar symptoms, as well will a vacuum leak from broken hoses and plastic elbows.
Have autozone or a mechanic read the diagnostic codes and let us know. What engine is in your 98?
It has a 4.0 MFI OHV. Thanks for the reply, I will bring it to Autozone. I hate having my elderly Mom drive this if it is running bad. And at her age a new car does not make sense.
