To take it off roading but a far can you go with a 4X2 comparted to a 4X4
I live in Havasu in the desert so I can still take a 2wd "X" out in the desert and have fun. Plus I like the looks of them raised as opposed to lowered. Also a lowered "X" would lose a lot of towing capacity and would ride like crap unless I wanted to spend a ridiculous amount of money on a custom air bag suspension.
if you build a 2wd well enough it will go just about as far as a 4wd.my old truck(locked, built trans, and big motor went just as far as my buddies 4wd if not farther sometimes
I have a 2003 2wd Excursion (V10). I want to put a Fabtech 6" lift eventually but right now I am looking for a smaller lift to hold me over for a while. Looking for about 2-3 inches but I can't seem to find anything. Can you guys help me out here?
I suggest saving your money and doing it right the first time. I was actually in the same position myself, I wanted a lift but not very much. If you had a 4wd truck you'd have more options. i.e. X, V, B, F code springs, they would give you the 2-3 inch lift you'd be looking for. 2wd trucks don't have very many options when it comes to springs.
Seeing as you have a V10 truck, you can actually lift 4 inches as opposed to 6 inches; I HAD to go 6 inches because of the heavier diesel. I don't have any regrets lifting 6 inches because it looks awesome, rides way better than stock, and get compliments everywhere I go.. i eat hybrids went with the 4 inch Fabtech lift and igotoneforya went with the 6 inch Fabtech lift, you can get an opinion from both sides of the perspective. I'll send them a PM and have them look in on this thread.
If you read through my thread, everything in there will prevent you and anyone else from making the same mistakes I did througout this learning process. You truck will look awesome and ride better, it's just a bit of a journey that you shouldn't take alone or without instruction.
Thanks for the help!! I will definately check out the thread. It looks like I will just have to wait and do the 6" down the road when the funds are available. Like you said it is better to spend the money and do it right the first time. Pretty much the only part I won't do myself is the alignment and installing a new ring and pinion to match the tire size. All the suspension work should no be too bad since I have lifted a lot of 4wd super dutys in the past. I am sure I will learn a lot by reading the threads that have been linked so far.
If you lift your 2wd, becareful because your trucks rear end will always come out 1 or 2 inchs shorter then ur front end. Me and Toredor both encountered this problem. I fixed my problem buy buying blocks. But you have to becarefull bout buying blocks because even thought some of them look the same, they arent for the vehicle. THe blocks that i bought were for a bronco, but LOOKED like blocks for a excursion lol. So my rear end came loose every other week! So i fixed that buy getting rid of the block and getting all my lift from leaf springs and the 1 inch block that came with the fabtech lift. BTW the fabtech lift came with 4 inch lift coils for the front and a 1 inch block for the rear. That doesnt make sense at all but thats why i am warning you about it. The leafs that i bought provided 4 inchs of lift and the block provided 1 inch of lift. So all in all, i had 5 inchs of lift in the rear and 4 inchs of lift in the front. Compared to the fabtech kit that provided me with 4 inchs of lift in the front and 1 or 2 inchs in the rear. My truck looked like i was towing a trailer with a 2000 pound tounge weight! If you have any questions, PM me
What springs did you use for the rear? I plan on installing an air bag helper setup in the rear as well so that will help with a minor rear end sag with no problems.
Whats the point in lifting it a couple inches if you KNOW you're going to go higher later. save the money and lift it the 6" first. sure 2-3'' to 6'' is a big difference but 0 to 6'' will having you saying "that's a big truck from what I was just at a few hours ago".
