hey all, mostly view the v-10 forum but wifes 07 expedition with 42k took a dump while cruising 60mph. said it felt like it went into limp mode then when she pulled over it died. put it in park and no crank. all the warning lights came on the dash when key turned. i get there and notice the PATS warning light is blinking. seemed like the key lost its program? pulled the cables from battery for a few minutes. went to start and it sporadically turned over but no start. hit the fuel reset button, no good. pulled the key out and noticed some lights stayed lit on the dash! figure this is a PCM issue. got it towed to the dealer. he wants both keys so he can reprogram. OK. said he got it started 3 seperate times but it shut down each time. wants to install a starter! for 450! if thats not it then install the PCM which is under warranty.
i questioned that the PCM has about 4 fuses to protect it and he says that its a surge not a fault to ground.
The starter only cranks the engine. If the engine starts, then the starter is out of the picture. If it then quits, the starter has nothing to do with that.
Has he checked for fuel and spark? Don't forget the basics. If he wants to replace the starter, because the engine just quits, I would throw a fit and threaten to go up the ladder. If you turn the key and nothing happens, then the starter might be a solution.
If it's a PATS issue, the engine won't even crank. It will also have codes set in memory for Theft related issues. Older cars would crank, and just not fire. But with all the newer cars/truck(at least the ones I've had PATS issues with) they wouldn't even crank. Turn the ignition to the ON position and watch the theft light. If it's flashing fast, you have a theft issue. Remote start in vehicle? Have seen issues with these messing with the vehicles factory transponder and causing no starts.
Were there any codes present in memory, lets go there first.....
i'll call the dealer monday and request codes and tell him the tsb # i got.
the only time it cranked was after i pulled the battery cables for about 5 minutes. then it only cranked a couple of times for maybe 2 seconds each. the theft light was flashing but all warning lights were lit also.
said the starter was 3 years 36K and the pcm was 5 years.
Fn guy called my wife and said he couldnt get thru to me (does happen at times) and she ok'd the starter. installed it and he said the truck started but still needs the PCM.
i'm going to pay the core charge and have it bench tested.
