Royal Purple

Any of you 6.0 folks running Royal Purple I would like to switch to synthetic and I can purchase for close to the same price as something along the lines of Mobil One.

I read some testing on it a year ago or so, and they say its no better, or worse, than regualr synthetics by any major brand.

I think I am going to switch to the Walmart home brand synthetic in the cars and truck.
Its supposed to be great oil as well, and about half the price of say M1, that I currently use.

I would use Rotella T over Walmart's SuperTech any day. I ran SuperTech in my car for quite a while and when I switched to a different synthetic it was much quieter.

Walmart has the Mobil 1 5 litres for 41.97 or something like that. I can get Royal Purple for a couple bucks more here in town. Crappy tire had some Rotella. Don't know if it was T or not. 19.99 but I don't think it was synthetic. They had some synthetic Rotella but it was 0-40.

I used it in my 99 5.4. Just curious about using it in the 6.0.

I gave RP a go in mine and I didn't notice any gains over regular dino. I'm moved on to other brands since then, but I stick with only synthetic.

My 2 cents, take it or leave it.

My Dad is an auto tech, so are some other relatives and friends.
My uncle owns a dealership that sells, bikes, quads, sleds etc. and I have several cousins that work their as techs.
I work on stuff for a living, and have rebuilt many motors.

I think most if not all major brands make a good oil.
I doubt you would do any harm running RP, M!, Castrol, etc. as all the synthetics are good quality stuff.
Some do certain things better than others, but none truly suck.
I also read up on oil and such lots, and watch TV shows that deal with motor rebuilds, oils etc. as I love those kind of shows.
I listen to customers and people out riding to hear what they like or hate for oil.

I think if you want to run RP then go ahead, what is it going to hurt.

That said I do find that in modern 2 strokes the oil is a large factor.
There are too many crappy oils for them out there, and I only recomend a slect few , and run or will run only a few in my sleds, motocross bikes etc.

But since we are not talking a 2 stroke, I think you should be fine whatever you choose to run Zip.

Even horsepower TV did a segemnt on oils about a year or so ago, and said RP was really about the same as the rest of the major synthetics in their tests.

Royal Purple is a quality synthetic product!

I have used RP for the past 15 years in everything from my X and ZO6 to my Scarab and farm equipment. In my X I use 20W-50 in the motor, SynchroMax in the transfer case, 75W-140 in the rear, 75W-90 in the front diff, Purple Ice in the cooling system, power steering fluid and ATF in the tranny (for last 15,000 miles). At 50,000 miles I started putting a quart of RP Racing 2-cycle outboard oil in my fuel tank about every 4th or 5th tank (about every 3,000 to 4,000 miles). My X has 74,000 miles on it and has never been to the dealer. I have run a tuner the entire time I have owned the X but I don't drive like an idiot. I just like having the extra power available when I need it.

I have the same tuner. I have only been running it for a couple months. I mainly keep it at level 1. I will try the tow setting next camping season. Tried level 5 once so far, it was crazy.

I normally run mine on level 3. I get 15.5 to 16.5 around town and 19.5 to 20 on the road @ 80 MPH. I use level 2 when I tow my 11,000 lbs trailer and get 12.5 to 14.5 on the highway. Again, I don't do WOT accels, burnouts, etc.. I enjoy my X too much to screw it up and the mods only enhance that enjoyment. Best SUV I have ever had and I had diesel suburbans before and thought they were great, until I got my X.

Isn't RP a true syn oil (i.e., group IV) vice others that are group III (i.e, Mobil 1, Rot). If so, I'd think RP would be better in the long run. I'd like to give RP a try but I can't get it at anywhere near the same price of Mobil 1 (which I now use). It would be nice to see how RP stands up to the shearing in the 6.0.

I did read a post somewhere referring to Royal Purple as junk by a guy that was a mechanic. The guy claimed he got a bad used oil analysis report when running it. I did use it in the wife's 4runner for a while but I felt that it started quieter with the Mobil 1 on cold mornings. I do think her Toyota ran just a tick better on the Mobile 1. I run their oils in my differential. I've heard that the High Pressure Oil Pump in the 6.0 is HELL on a lot of the oils so if you do run it don't run an extended oil change interval. I ran it for 5000 miles in mine but I didn't see any difference for the additional cost, but I can't say anything bad about it.

When I contacted Royal Purple, they told me that their oil is a group IV base stock with some Group V added to it. I did not consider RP any further at that time (due mainly to price), but I am intrested in seeing some UOA's on it. I know there were some posted on BITOG, I just haven't made the effort to look them up yet / again.

Mobil 1 sure seems to have dropped to the Group III base stock (with some Group IV added - according to what I can dig up):

I have read their ESP oil is the Group IV formula, but it sure seems impossible to prove any of this.
