Yeah Ive always thought about that too, but the exchange engines really arent that cheap either.
I SHOULD get my uncle to rebuild it for me, he has all the tools, and he does a bangup job. He has done lots of old engines out of model t's and whatnot, up to a few newer small diesels. Hes a brilliant fella, but he is always booked up!
I could get in there no prob, but that does take away from his business, and I dont wanna do that to him either.
Yeah you have that right! Im gonna throw that chevy on kijiji in the spring once more before I take it out to my uncles. Then Im coming home with a nice rough 51 or so merc half ton shortbox. Gonna take some work, but thats gonna be my new REAL project. No more playing with my 90's fords then haha.
That was what the 300 was in my truck. It was a exchange rebuild from WAR. Out of Winnipeg. Cam was already wore as was a bunch of valave guides. The guys at Warman Automotive said the guides werew really cheap guides along with other parts like the crank bearings. They were wore out also. yet the engine ran strong, but had a lot of chatter going on from the wore out bearing and guides and and cam.
Now it runs pretty smooth.
Thier last names are Unrahs. Calvin is one of the 3 brothers. Just tell them Glen from Delisle sent you to them. They know me. The other is Richard. I cannot remember the 3rd name.
They are good honest boys and stand behind their work.
Calvin called me back today, seems i might go with him. He is going to call back in couple days with a price quote, no one else seemed to be able to give a quote.

Before you put it there, figure out your price and let me know, my brother is looking for an old bow tie project truck.
Well Calvin called tonight, thanks to the crappy exchange now with American $$$ the parts will run around $1300, that's 6 new pistons, all gaskets, bearings, and i think fixing the crank. Can't get a new cam gear or chain......i think mine are still okay, have to double check.
Figures once i give him around $2300 i can have the engine back. This will be me assembling crank and pistons and timing cover, pan etc.....
He will do the w valve train install.
Not very cheap
