I'm trying to test the fuel pump from my front tank (87 F150 4.9l 4x4). I connected it straight to the battery and it made a little screeching sound for less than a second and then stopped. Can't get it to make another sound.
Shouldn't it run continuously? Does that fact that it doesn't run continuously mean it is bad?
thanks for the quick reply Clerk. Just trying to confirm whether or not the pump is bad. Was only going to run it far a few seconds, but it only made a quick little screeching noise.
FYI I just replaced my fuel pump. I basically tested my old one by plugging it into the wire harness and it hummed for a few secs, I reinstalled it thinking it was fine. Once I did that the truck still wouldnt start. I pulled the fuel line after the fuel filter and tested again, no gas flowed! The pump was bad even though it "sounded" like it worked ;-)
Thanks for the info guys. I took the pump out of the rear tank and it ran like crazy when I hooked it up to power, so I bought a new Carter pump to put back in the front tank tonight.
ok this is partially on topic ok A. my fuel pumps are bad all three the pressure pump and both intank sending units. B. prior to their demise I had the dreaded crossflow problem. c. since the 87s been sitting since 02 will I have to also replace the fuel injectors. and the question thats partially on topic is if I replaced all 3 pumps would it resolve the tank cross flow problem???
