Hey everyone, I have been looking into shift kits for my AOD transmission. I found two likely candidates the Transgo and B&M shift kits. Does anyone have any experience with either one? What are the differences?
Thanks
I've been thinking the same thing and came up with the same 2 options. I'm not sure which way to swing either, so I look forward to hearing opinions as well.
A fella on the Big Block sub forum used a Superior shift correction kit in his E4OD and picked up .5 in the 1/4. That is the kit I purchased for my truck (not installed yet). It seems like a better bang for the buck kit. You don't just get the "shift kit", you get other upgrades to help solve common problems in your particular trans. This kit includes upgrades that will require removal of the trans, but many of the pieces can be installed from the pan. I asked the rep about simply installing the pieces that are accessible from the pan and he said that would be fine, you just won't be able to take advantage of the pump upgrades.
i went trough this dilema when i was thinking of buying a shift kit, if you search the forums you'll find just as many saying transgo is the best, as there are people that swear by the B&M.
I finally decided it was my own pick out of the top two choices. i ended up buying the B&M shift kit, i think it defenitely did everything it said it did and i'm totally happy with it, and no problems so far, my E4OD had close to 200k miles on it when i installed it.
All, I've still been back and forth. I see that B&M has the shift improver kit and the Transpak kit. From what I've read, I think the Shift Improver Kit is the way to go for me. I dont' see a need for me to pull the tranny into 1st gear when driving, so I think the additional money is wasted on my truck. The Shift Improver Kit seems to have the same parts and procedures as the TransGo kit, for more money.
Any last minute suggestions? It's mostly around town, some offroading, nothing heavy duty.
I think my AOD may be acting up though. I'm going to start another thread for that problem.

you read the fine print...
Its all in what kind of application you want to use...
I installed a kit from Baumann Engineering. It really helped the shifting and the control of the AOD. Make sure that the unit is in good condition before you put any kit in it. Upping the line pressure can cause one that is worn to leak and worse.
the b@m is easier to install, for whatever that means, i have used the bm in some previous cars and trucks i have owned and they worked fine but i stll think the transgo is better, because bm is just a plate and transgo is a bunch of things combined to raise line pressure and what not. And the transgo is about 100.00 and the bm is 40
go with the transgo kit.... b&m is primarily a chevy product... and thats not what we're working on. update your trans and get a transgo kit, they've been in business longer
I too am looking at the shift kit from Baumann Engineering. Go to this link Most Popular Products - Baumann Electronic Controls, LLC and scroll down to "ReCal Pro™ AOD-E/4R70W Valve Body Recalibration Kit". It looks like a very inclusive kit that fixes many common problems with the transmission. For $100 it is almost as much as the Transgo kits and seems to advertise more fixes and helps. This company seems to deal exclusively with Ford trannies so they should know there stuff. You don't have to remove the transmission either.

I have the AOD, not the AOD-E so their "ReCal Pro™ AOD Valve Body Recalibration Kit" is actually cheaper. They all sound like they do the same thing. I've been leaning toward the TransGo again, but I see that Baumman has the "AOD Pressure Regulator Boost Valve Kit" that is purchased separately. That brings the price right back upto the TransGo. Sounds like the 2 are the same, except that I see your point about only doing Ford Trannys. Hmmm...
Whoops, missed that we're talking about an AOD not AODE. So at only $60 for the kit you save some dough and still get a better kit IMHO. Or you can get the valve kit too. If you read all the information on the AOD page it really sounds like they know what they are talking about and know what needs to be fixed in the tranny. Sure they might just say all that to make you think that they know what they are talking about, but since they only do Ford trannies surely they know what they are doing.
Pick the one you like the best, but when I do mine I'm going with the Baumann Engineering kit. Transgo and B&M make shift kits for all kinds of transmissions, so theirs might not be as vehicle specific as Baumann's is. But once again this is strictly my opinion.
Yeah, I read all of the information on their site, including the FAQ's. I'm most likely going to go with the Baumann, both kits together.
Now I just have to make sure mine is working fine again, after the not shifting problem I've been having. Posted in another thread "AOD not shifting properly"
Figured, just as soon as I start looking at shift kits, my tranny acts up.
I have B&M kits in three trucks.95&93Lightnings,and the AOD in my 79 f-150.The AOD kit was a Ford Motorsport part so I figure B&M must be OK on Ford trannys since Motorsport uses them.I haven't had any problems and am satisfied, especially at the price. One suggestion though, use the tow&RV settings unless you have a looser than stock convertor. My 95L will rattle your teeth, but it's cool to hear the tires on every shift. The big complaint I have is hitting reverse sooo hard with the High performance setting. The 93L has the tow&RV setting and it's fine.
