Electric Fuel Pump

Just wondering what are the benfits of switching over to an electric fuel pump. I had a stock '88 7.3 and have a new lift pump on it less than 1000 miles. I have been reading about guys switching over to an electric pump and was wondering why? Any comments would be apprecated

It does make things easier to push any air out of the system when doing fuel filter changes, or any work on the fuel system, or if your system sucks air in some where after engine is shut down

Thanks, that makes sense. So do you install it around where the lift pump is and wire it to the key? and then do what with the lift pump?

You install the pump on the frame just forward of the tank selector valve, it is best to use a relay to provide power that way not all the pump power is coming through your key switch. You can leave your lift pump in place but it is best to remove it and install a block off plate in its place. If I remember right a small block ford block off plate will fit. By the way a pump like a holley red works best not one of those cheap pulse pumps.

I put one of those Holley Red (I think it was 14 psi) pumps on mine with a regulator awhile back, and it pumped ok for about a month. Then it got to where i didn't have any fuel pressure, and it was very low on volume, too. I did a flow test on it one day and it pumps fuel good for about maybe 5 minutes, then just goes to crap. That was running from a bucket to another bucket. I was getting where it would idle ok, but as soon as i put a load on the engine, it would start running rough. I was also sucking air through a tiny hole in the pickup tube in the rear tank too. I ended up putting a 100 gallon tank on the flatbed and putting a new mechanical pump on it. With the tank on top of the bed, you don't have to worry about fuel running back to the tank, or having to park pointed downhill. I've tried the facet pump too, but it just didn't have the pressure or the volume I wanted.

you put it in front of the selector valve.i just cut out a piece of the existing line and ran fuel hose up about 4 inches on each side of the line and put the pump in between.i got a cheapo $40 dollar one from autozone and its been on for about 3000 miles and goin strong still even in the sub zero temps here.i do carry a spare in my toolbox just in case.and it will only take 5 minutes to swap over if it does go bad
