I'm looking at a 1995 Explorer XLT as an off road toy. 4.0L v6. I'll lift in a few inches, put an e-locker or the like in the rear end, LS up font maybe, and some engine work. I'm assuming that it has a 3.73 LS rear end. Couple of questions. What tranny is in those things? What will they bolt up to? And how will it do with a little bigger engine? Any one ever beefed one of these up before? how do they do?
The A4LD isn't the strongest, but many seem to go the distance, and they are better than the first few years of the 5 speed methinks. You can swap a GM 700R in there for a lower first gear, scroll down halfway here:
Or you can put a 5.0 in there, using parts from a later Ex, but due to trans issues, and the fact the V8s used AWD vs. the more conventional set up for V6s, this might be more trouble than it's worth.
