Block Heater Question

I dont think my block heater isn't working anymore. my 7.3 doesnt like to start around -20 Celsius and colder and i am using 5w40 syn. i crawled under the truck and felt the block heater on the block and it is cold. I was wondering when i change it, will oil pour out or oil? and how much will i loose? 2001 F350 7.3LTR

I thought the original block heaters for our truck heated near the oil filter/OIL....really never cared to know since it always worked lol

Sounds to me like the cord might be bad...they are prone to rub threw near the frame in spots. Get another cord before replacing the entire heating element

or better yet test the cord and heater before replacing with an ohm meter

Good luck!

most of the time the problem is the 3 prong plug on the cord that goes bad!id replace that first!

Like Greg said check the plug.

I had to replace mine last year.

There were some posts last year on different ways to
to place the plug with an all weather (marine) style plug
in the bumper.

Ohm it out first to make sure its the Cord or the block heater it self. check the cord first plugged in. you should get around 15 or so Ohm's. if you dont' then take the cord OFF, and Ohm the little pins on the block heater. its kind of hard so if you have a friend to hold the MM for you. cause its kind of hard by your self. it can be done, but hard, (ask me how I know lol)
I would think its just the cord, cause I JUST replaced mine now it works like a charm.

Good luck

The block heater is in the block and you lose most of your coolant changing them.
It heats the water/coolant not the oil.
You can feel a rad hose and tell if its working or not , plus most times you can hear them sizzling when you first plug it in.

I got it at at local shop that does my Big projects on the truck that I can't do.

was like $17 not from the dealer. Dealer wanted $80, but I think he was giving me the kit that included Both Heater and cord cause they are separat.

took me longer to route it cause I was cold when I did it. I actually just ran it to hang above the head light. just tuck it in when I am not using it. I will re-route it when it warms up.

if you can't find one, I can see if I Can get another if you are willing to pay for it and shipping.

but I would also TEST first to narrow it down. but my $ is on the cord

I need to replace my cord also, the last time I used it a fire ball shot out from the heater/wheel well area. I noticed a hole in my cord also. I am hoping it's just the cord. I'd like to test the heater, how many ohms would there be on it and are there just 2 pins you touch to? Take a look at my gallery I have pics of my cord in there. I could sure use it now, truck started just fine at 17* but yesterday it was 2* and it didn't like starting at that temp.

I replaced my cord end(it was not bad)with this..

It keeps the cord from moving around all the time.

Yes it actually stays good and dry. And the back has a rubber boot to keep the elements out from the back.
