Bullet-Proofing an E4OD How To?

OK, it seems like I did indeed blow my trans after a pretty good run of 220k miles untouched. I'll be yanking it out the next few days after Christmas. What do you guys suggest I can do to bullet-proof it? I want it to be suitable for towing and snow plowing (private driveways, not commercial) So other than the trans cooler, what can be done internally to beef it up? I'm not worried about overkill, as that's what I do best! The truck's engine is a 5.8 and recently rebuilt from oil pan up and is very smooth running. No check engine codes, passed CT emissions very easily. I'd like the truck to be ready for a little hard work, when the time arises. Its a '96 4x4 250 single cab 8' bed. Thanks to all the guru's out there-great forum!
Roger

Make sure the shop that rebuilds it makes all the Ford recommended mods and updates. Like lubrication holes for the overdrive unit. If they don't know what mods to make, go to another shop. Oversize cooler a must...

when I ask the same question awhile ago and I was told that the best rebuilts come from a place called Brians Truck Service. I think they are in AR and ship the rebuilt to you.

Go synthetic. Engine oil too. Standard petrol based fluids begin to decompose and loose molecular cohesion as soon as op. temp is reached. Temps above that accelerate the rate of breakdown in physical properties exponentially with the increase in temp. The high #'s of catastrophic component failure due to fluid condition is common knowledge. My personal opinion is not using synth.'s whenever possible is asking for unnecessary mechanical complications & premature failure. This is also true regarding the hydrolic brake system. The only reason I can think of not to use use Synthetics is possibly the some people find vehicle repair a source of relaxation & legitimate excuse for doing something they like to do instead of have to do.

With the heavy hauling I do when i rebuilt my E40D I found that adding a tranny temp guage and a drain plug to the pan was well worth the money. The tranny seams to shift smooter wile under load when I change the fuild in the tranny every 3 oil changes. Besides its a cheep insurance. And the heat guage is mostly cheep insurance so i don't drop it Id recomend for snow plow.
