im looking to buy a stock or some what stock 1978 or 1979 bronco soon. i want to do the works on it between axles(dana 60 posi), driveshafts, gears, engine(460ci), lift(4"-8") and exuast and what ever else it takes. i want to know how difficult or easy and how much time and money it will take to make a stock bronco into a mudding and trail blazing badass?
Welcome to FTE. Hope you find what you are looking for. There are a lot fo us here with more information than we know what to do with. Fortunately, we are willing to share it freely. And now, to your inquiry...
That's a loaded question. To do it right and to apply the upgrades and changes in a safe and logical manner will take thousands of dollars and many hours, days, weeks, months even years unless you are independently wealthy and have nothing to do but work on your truck. How long this process takes depends on how much you are willing to learn about the process and the components required to complete the project as well. You can throw a ton of money at this kind of thing and STILL not have a decent rig to show for it unless you are willing understand exactly what you are doing and what the changes you are making to the truck will actually accomplish in the way of improved performance. Keep in mind too that the adage "you get what you pay for" applies more frequently than most folks would like to admit. So, don't skimp on critical parts... remember this truck is gonna be carrying around the most important person in the world to you... YOU!
With all that said, I doubt anyone can give you a clear time line and considering that most of us aren't willing or able to build a ground-up trail rig with no financial limitations, the cost of parts changes over time so what it will end up costing is purely based on how much money you are willing to put into it, how rapidly you can generate that funding, and how much time you have on your hands to spend putting it together.
(a tip for the newcomer, Ford's limited slip differential is a trac-loc. GM used the term "posi" to describe a similar setup, most of the guys won't say anything but there are a few die-hards that will recognize the difference.)
well to clear things up im a college student only in my second term working 30 hours a week and have almost everyday to get some kind of a chance to work on it for at least a couple hours and have saved a around 5 grand for this project. and i am very willing to learn along the way as i build .i mainly want to add a 460ci with a 4 speed, and NP205 and dana 60's front and rear with trac-loc, and a winch. im just looking for a badass mudding machine not a road queen. i dont really care how it looks only about how it performs. thanks for the addvice. and i could always use more tips and addvice from the pros out there thanks.
