There is a great debate about whether flowmasters or magnaflow is better, but in my opinion they both sound good and will give your truck a nice low rumble. I just have straight pipes that dump out behind the cab and they are louder than almost any truck around. Glasspacks will make it louder, but it will sound more like a Chebby smallblock.
If you want a good tone, then the Flowmaster is a goodie. I wanted LOUD!!!!!!!!!!! for my 79 with a 400m. We added headers, 3" pipes, 24" glasspacks just under the cab, then they turn up, and go through the bed, and into 5" Stacks off an old Peterbuilt.

I'd go straight pipe, these old trucks sound great with straight pipe. If you don't want it that loud (which is understandable, a 460 with straight pipes might get you in trouble), everyone I know that works on their cars uses flowmasters.
Get on Youtube and listen to various exhaust videos for these trucks to get an idea of what you want your truck to sound like.
I'm not a big fan of flowmaster, everybody and their brother seems to run them around here and they all sound alike to me, i just run long tube headers that dump directly into 24" (perforated core) glasspacks, it lets me enjoy the sweet sounds of combustion without being too obnoxiously loud, they flow just like straight pipe but are tad quieter, it turns the cops heads but isn't loud enough to make em turn on the shiny blue lights.
I ran flowmaster 40's are mine, I liked the sound but switched over to Magnaflows when I read about the restriction of the flowmasters from guys running dynos (not sales ads). The Magnaflows are a little deeper in tone and not quite as loud but the truck is much more responsive and revs like nobodys business.
For me having tried the same size mufflers: Flowmasters for sound
Magnaflows for performance
If you don't care too much about performance and just want loud and annoying, then get a smaller pipe. There is a guy here at school with a 440 dodge and he has a 1in pipe from the manifolds back. You want to talk about LOUD. Annoying as hell, and I'm sure his power is severely restricted, but still loud.
im runnin straight pipes off the manifolds with my 400 i love the way it sounds, ive set off car alarms, one downfall was i got ticket in the winter when the high idle was runnin in the college parking lot, the one time i wasnt goofin around.
I have a 78 351M with a set of 3" Thrush Welded and they have a good throaty sound but not the loudest I have heard. Still though for $30 bucks a muffler I am very happy with em
It all boils down to what sound YOU like best.I run a set of flowmasters on a truck i have and another set on my 73 torino.I like the way they sound, but on on the oher hand i have two other rigs i run all stainles Borla.I love the sound and performance but you pay for it.
I personaly dont like the sound of magnaflows or dynomaxs.Run what you like or most likly can offord.

that's exactally right. whatever YOU want for sound. "loud" sound or "flow" sound. of course it costs money for Flowmaster and MagnaFlow but they do pay for themselves if you want a tone. if you just want sound no matter what it sounds like go glasspacks for $30 a piece. or just plain "FREE" straight pipe, until you get a ticket then it's not free anymore.
When I bought my highboy, the previous owner had some obnoxious cherry bombs in a dual pipe setup running to side exits behind the rear wheel. They were leaking, and probably sounded like crap even when they were first installed.
A month ago, I had a local custom shop put on dual Flowmaster 44's with custom bent aluminized pipe from the exhaust manifolds to the SS exhaust tips. They exit off to the side directly in front of the rear wheels. They are definitely "throaty" and people turn and look when I drive by. I just have a stock 360FE setup, but I would have gone a little milder (just my preference). The shop offered me SS Magnaflows instead of the Flowmaster 44's, but I was drawn to the Flowmasters because I've had them on other trucks. Being from the North and in the interest of avoiding rust at all costs, I probably should have went with the SS Magnaflows, which would have had a more mild sound to them.
I like a good sounding exhaust, but if it's overly loud, raspy, and annoying, then people won't appreciate your truck because they're set off by the sound.
